I'm going to put on my schizoposting hat and make a prediction of something dark looming on the horizon.

When I first saw this I was initially confused, because to my knowledge Merkel hated Trump as much as all the other left wing big names in politics. Then it dawned on me, this is the long term strategy of the established powers, and how they'll take control over the internet in a few years. Right now many people on the right are feeling disenfranchised by big tech, and many on the left just wish the "extremist" right wing would just go away. Both the US and Europe will use this opportunity to propose a new and improved nationalized internet where everyone is treated "equally", and the normies will eat it all up expecting a new golden age, when in reality they've just created a worldwide Great Firewall. Websites will be individually searched and inspected before they can go online, with the richest of the rich having enough "influence" to always make the cut, and database servers will have yearly checks by a new alphabet agency to archive personal information and recordings, and to search for any reprehensible content, whether manually or by a program every site will be forced to implement. Any major political dissidence will be quickly quelled and scrubbed from memory, and the only sites allowed to archive content will be approved by the state and will refuse to archive any "misinformation" that might get posted. All of this will be championed by the major wave of anti-corporate sentiment the Capitol event caused, and if we're not careful, it could be the death kneel of the free internet.

Not to my knowledge, he remained a socialist all his life, even after he saw the Soviet Union and their puppet commies in Spain murdering non-Soviet leftists. From his works you can see Orwell hated authoritarian leftists first and foremost (i.e. the USSR, which he saw their impact in Spain). But he had plenty to say to the "socialists" who were "vegetarian cranks" (basically the upper-class hipsters of his day) and the utopian Moviebobists of his day (even if HG Wells was a good writer and wasn't a total sociopath) who were huge in the 1930s Labour Party.

It's why I'd recommend Road to Wigan Pier rather than more famous books, since in that book he gives a great argument for socialism while utterly dismantling the Labour Party and various communists. He predicts the era where we have a "machine society" and views it as an era where we live in a state of meaningless.
