I've not posted on that site in a long time but IIRC it was similar back then (You'd also get banned if you mentioned the pirate forums outside of said forums), I guess Lowtax wanted to legitimise the forums or something since around that time there was a callout thread on FYAD (Their shitposting board) for people posting underage anime porn on their anime sub forum (4chan similarly got rid of that around the same time ).

Oh yeah another reason people paid to join was to be part of various Something Awful online gaming guilds, GoonSwarm on EVE being the biggest one.

SA's play-by-post forum, The Game Room, is some of the best groups I've ever run games in. The paywall keeps out the riff-raff. Also, it's got the only group of BattleTech fans I can stand to associate with anymore. So there's that.

MPC is worth mentioning, because it's another spin off from SA. I used to post on all those sites back in the day, so I'll explain the long and sordid history. Spoilered for autism.

Back in 1999, Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka started SA because he thought he could make bank from ad revenue. The dot com bubble burst, and Lowtax got shit on. He started charging money for the forums, not because he thought he could make money, but because he was too poor / lazy to keep the forums from crashing all the time, and thought by charging it would take the load off. 'Tax bumbled into success, and SA grew into a tight-knit community. However, all was not well. Lowtax picked the most incompent person he could find to code the servers, Radium. Radium had no formal experience in tech stuff and was only hired because him and Lowtax were buddies when they used to work for Planet Quake.

Growing tired of Radium's shitty code and attitude, and faggy admin and goon histrionics, the Something Awful Sycophant Squad was created in late 2006. SASS was originally meant just to chat about ways to try to improve SA, but grew into its own community, and the SASSholes stopped giving a shit about trying to improve that den of catladies, pedophiles, and neckbeards. This made the Admins of SASS mad, so they stopped caring. It was shut down / hacked by weev around 2009.

Then Hangly Man stepped in and created The New Effort. It was called that because there was a short-lived subforum called "Effort" on SASS and was intended for serious disscussion, and not spamming MANGOSTEEN CHINK WIFE THOUSAND DOLLAR CHAIR. Hangly was an odd duck. He thought he could make TNE "the right wing Salon". He also considered himself a white nationalist, despite the fact he fathered two half Asian children. He also converted to Russian Orthodox Christianity because one of TNE's members talked him into it. He was also a huge fan of the TV show Glee, contray to the fact he claimed to be a heterosexual. Nancyboy aka Pleasureman then started My Posting Career to mock Hangly. Hangly later had a massive meltdown and deleted TNE in 2011 or 2012.

The setting has a strong appeal for cryptofascists and autists. For instance, people will argue that the developers hate X or Y faction by going through the regiments of that army, determining their average experience level, multiplying it by the level of advanced technology in use with an additional bonus for top-quality gear, and then using that one number as "concrete indicators" of how much favor one side has. Then there's a lot of people who spend a creepy amount of time talking about how well society would function with a hierarchical system with the military on top and decision-making and leadership were determined by single combat.
