Steve1989MREInfo / Steve1989 / Steve Thomas - that guy that eats old MREs

I think he made the thanksgiving mre as a holiday special type of thing. He knows that the portions are too big, but its thanksgiving and he wanted the video to be festive. He is just trying to have fun for the holidays.
He also got to have leftovers. What's Thanksgiving dinner without leftovers?

Shameless necro, but I'd love to see a discussion on the MRE community as a whole. All of them bring unique personalities, despite being a bunch of old dudes (except Emmyfromjapan and stickyfingas) who eat nothing but military food.

TBH I don't give a shit about 'the community', Steve could be reviewing denture adhesive creams from 75 years ago and I would still watch him. The MREs are secondary. It's his delivery of what he reviews that makes his show.

Once I stop watching him I no longer yearn to eat an MRE, unlike say, watching Man Made Mead videos which actually got me off my ass and home-brewing my own mead. (Which is awesome, btw).

Steve's channel is more about him and about history rather then the food, at least to me.

Agree 100%
Steve is also a great historian with a genuine love for what he does. It radiates throughout his shows. I enjoy the wonder in his voice and the excitement of trying MRE's from other countries. He's one of my favorites next to Townsends.

If you like Townsends here's another one you'll probably like too, Tasting History . Max Miller finds really funky ancient and up to near- current times forgotten recipes, makes them on camera and tells a history lesson halfway through. I made a syllabub along with his vid on it and it was the most astoundingly delicious boozy dessert i've had in ages.

He's done at least one crossover with Townsends as well.

I have always wondered whether or not Steve ever got food poisoning from any of the decades-old MREs that he would eat.

Only two times have been a Ukrainian ration he ate before doing the show which was actually before its "Best before" date. He got either botulism or e.coli from it, he says one or the other in interviews but it put him in the hospital regardless.

Second was a Chinese ration that I believe was also before its expiration date. This was the same one with the green crud on the noddles, which wasn't mold, but it still made him sick.

Shockingly, the decade or century old ones have not poisoned him.

Not quite the same thing, and the niggers won't even ship to Canada so fuck em. Thanks for trying though.

That raindeer stew DID look goddamn delicious. It was one of the food items where I actually DID want to eat it long after the episode was over. The freeze-dried fruit salad from an American MRE is another. The way Steve raves about em I could taste it.

I am going off memory here (of Steve's video) it was the Norwegian Arctic Field Ration correct?
If so the Real/DryTech should be the same thing, just its the main/civilian and not the full military ration (Which I have had a few of differing menus and outside of a side [MRE pizza / shelf stable cinnamon bun IIRC/etc) tend to be the same)

I do have a Raindeer stew that I never got around to trying yet. MREMountin tends to have the mains every now and then (which is how I got the raindeer stew).

You are correct. The Chinese MRE shocked me, personally. An MRE well within it's usable period - with such low quality. Seething with contempt. The only redemption was the reusable drink bladder. I think it had a bite valve iirc?
I've heard similar things from Chinese ex-pats. The troops are treated like shit. You are considered a waste of 'Party Resources'. The mess hall meals are just as bad as the MREs. Their fatigues and boots are also poorly made. No info about the firearms, but I don't know anyone who collects them...

Can't really blame 'communism' (do we even consider the CCP communist?) North Korean soldiers are treated like gods in comparison. You might get a parasite, but that just proves you ate meat. The civvies are literally starving in the street.

(sigh) I am an idiot. I was going off the item title as 'game pot freeze-dried outdoor stew' without seeing the explicit 'Reindeer Stew' on the image of the actual food retort pouch instead. :stupid:

That clearly is the real deal. Since I can't order one from them via Amazon, I will take a look at MREmountain and see if I can get either that MRE or that main, cos now I really want to try it LOL.

iirc he also cracked a tooth on the rock hard sesame bars in the British packs.

Yeah, the quality (lack thereof, rather) of the Chinese MREs stunned me. Usually in totalitarian societies, the military generally enjoys better and more food. I grant that MREs are nobody's idea of haute cuisine, but holy shit, even the Russians treat their guys better.

Try this link, it's currently not available but they surely get new stock. AFAIK the ship internationally too.

They dont all hate each other though, thats why i dont think a general thread would work. Unless nikocado avocado starts doing mre reviews, the whole community is too spread out and vague.

Yeah, aside from the MRE Museum incident (Which details are still sparse and Steve just quietly stopped associating rather than calling them out) there's not really any drama at all among them.
