Oh yeah. A few of Trump's pardons were from people decades ago. A lot of times they are just symbolic.

Remember when Trump pardoned Susan B Anthony and Twitter had to race to call her a bigot because she didn't fight for black women hard enough?

But also the President can only pardon people for federal crimes, so for example Trump couldn't pardon Kyle Rittenhouse because those were all state crimes. As far as I know, Saint Floyd didn't commit any Federal crimes, but I never looked it up and won't argue if someone shows that he did. Usually street thugs like him aren't doing Federal shit though.

There's not much restricting the presidential pardon power outside the highlighted bit and impeachment related restrictions, so I don't see any reason he couldn't have pardoned Floyd for any possible federal crime he may have committed but not been charged with during his life.

It would be an empty gesture, but the point wouldn't be what the pardon accomplishes legally, but rather watching the chain reaction of confused takes and bizarre articles that would inevitably follow dropping that particular hand grenade into the room.

Watching lawfare twitter tie themselves in knots over it would be well worth it but c'est la vide.

kinda annoyed I didn't think of it earlier. not that I assume I have such an impact, but all ideas start somewhere small. just imagine the usual trolls pushing #pardongeorgefloyd and all the twittertards picking it up... some lulz could've been had.

His record at its worst was the armed burglary in Texas, so it would be up to Governor Abbott to cause the massive salt if it were even possible.

I think they have "self-preservation" in the sense that they think they have "plot armor".

Their sense of self-preservation comes from the fact that if someone actually did punch on the gas, they'd be going to prison for the rest of their lives for manslaughter/murder and hate crime charges. Also, maybe 1 or 2 of them are stupid enough to think they would be martyrs for the cause, I dunno.

So they are reading the situation "correctly" that 99% of people won't run them over for fear of reprisal.
