Attacking someone in mid transformation was a old trope to where certain series like Bio Booster Guyzer had made it a point of having a defense mechanism for it. And antagonists smart enough to time their attacks right when the transformation is completed and/or setup situations where transformations would either insta gib friendlies or exposed the identity of the protagonists.

This is easily my favorite episode of the season so far, probably because all the good parts didn't require too much animation. MAPPA fucking nailed it emotionally. though they didn't do too bad with Eren fighting Porco honestly. They cut out one of my favorite panels though

Too gorey? Too hard to animate? IDK.

While I was considering my disappointment over the copious use of CG, and stared in confusion as it appeared that the Colossal Titan was not rendered in CG (or was otherwise indistinguishable from hand-drawn), it hit me: for some reason, where WIT used 3D backgrounds with hand-drawn characters, MAPPA employs 3D characters with (mostly) 2D backgrounds.

Also, I'm in agreement with @stuffandthings-- screw you guys, I read this manga to have a good time and the only issue I have so far is Falco becoming the flying Titan being foreshadowed in his name. Someone thought they were being clever, but really they were being cheeky.

...that, and the fact that they've kind of glossed over how they got Falco to get his Titan to sprout wings. I think they used the fact that Falco ingested Zeke's spinal fluid so they could use P A T H S to access data from a shifter who could fly.

As far as the motivation for the coalition to save the world... I'm conflicted. Of course, Reiner, Annie, Gabi, and Falco have motivation to do this because they're saving their families and the people they know. The rest of them, I considered, were stuck in their mindset of "saving humanity" back from when they thought that humanity didn't exist outside the walls, but that wasn't a very strong rationale. Of course, in the meta, the introduction of the Rumbling as a concept was the creation of a Chekhov's Gun-- it had to happen and it would in fact be the biggest climax of the story, but the question became how the Eldians (and in particular, our characters of focus) would take it, since they weren't characterized in the same way that Eren was at all (and it's his characterization clashing with the other characters of note that leads him to this) but it would have been an action that benefited them and their people.

I'm of the mind that's what's happening is that they've seen the world beyond the walls, and they've seen the people-- they've had a variety of experiences, but some of them were also pleasant, so they recognize them all as human and find it unconscionable that they'd be killing other human beings, and much more every other human being outside Paradis, after living lives where humanity was ultimately united against the threat of the Titans only to find out that they were also human. Of course, Eren feels the same way, but not only does he have his father's experiences and thus a greater appreciation for the cruelty of the world against their people, he's also particularly broken and pathologically obsessed with freedom for himself and the people he loves, so of the main cast, he's the first to break out of his decision paralysis and take the traditional approach of total war.
I love how no one brings up just how utterly sadistic Annie was back in the first arc. I mean, she literally spun around a cadet so hard by his gear he fucking died. Not to mention all the other fucked up shit she did.
Didn't they have a chapter dedicated to them hashing out everything the Marleyan shifters did to them?
Speaking of gender flipping, new Mikasa looks like a dude.
It's so strange. I got the sense that she cut her hair shorter in the manga, but she's still clearly female, still clearly her. In the anime, it feels as though she got all but Rule 63'd altogether, but it's still clearly her because she has her voice.

Not to Annie specifically.

Annie and all the shit she did in general seemed to be forgotten about by most of main cast. The only death mentioned that she caused was fucking Marco's, and that was it. All those other people she killed, even the ones she didn't have to? Not mentioned at all. Not even Levi's squad.

The nutcracker moment was perfect. CGI still looks a bit wonky, but the biggest upside to MAPPA going with designs closer to the manga is that Armin finally looks like a male instead of Historia's little sister.
Porco's voice acting during the nutcracker scene was just heartbreaking. I really didn't feel much for Porco in the manga, and I like how they've softened him up bit.

Another mostly hit episode for me, great pacing, and the little photos in the Panzer unit's machine gun nests was brilliant detail. But some of that CGI was just painful. Mostly the Beast Titan's face, at one point he's looking down and it's almost like his beard is clipping through his chest. I've seen some broadcast to Blu-Ray comparisons of earlier seasons, so I have hopes it can be cleaned up, at least a little. And if Mappa had to make a choice between more sloppy frames and less motion but better drawn, I'm glad for the decision they made. I was rewatching Vinland Saga and some of those late season episodes get ROUGH looking.

Still, reddit lost their collective memetic mind over how Floch looked in the last episode. Some people thought he looked fat, some people thought he looked like early Bieber, and some people thought he looked like Ken from Toy Story 3.

So of course, in a matter of hours, some high quality autist artist had created this.

I don't get the logic that apologists are using in saying that MAPPA "only had eight months" to do this. They technically had an indefinite amount of time to do this, bound only by however long the hype train would last. The season's animation is at least bearable in net, and the most recent episode was good, but it makes no sense that all the Titans are being animated in CG when the principle of animation shouldn't be able to differentiate based on how big an object is in-universe.

Covering my bases, I never understood why the Colossal Titan in S2 and S3 was CG-animated, either.

The hilarious bit is Jean saying "Annie's fought enough", even though I'm pretty sure Jean witnessed the human yo-yo scene with his own eyes and should be the last person cutting her any slack.

That line by him is such bullshit it's ridiculous.

"Annie's fought enough", man, shut the fuck up, no she hasn't. The bitch has fought the least out of all you. Send her crystal ass back out there. It's the least she can do for killing a fuckton of civilians, and your fellow soldiers.

Speaking of only the anime version this season comes across as one continuous Joker's "you get what you deserve" to the Marlayians. Could have left well enough alone. Sure send people to keep tabs on current events on Paradis, Maybe keep sending titans to keep them from too adventurous outside of the Wall. But failing to disclosed that hugely critical piece of information of that arrangement keeping the Eldiens happily within the Wall to anyone else is a monumental fuckup for both Marlay and the King.

On a different subject did the manga ever touch the other three cities on outer wall opposite of Eren's hometown.

I think Isayama finds Reiner more fun to torture than Annie so he didn't really bother giving her a redemption arc. She even had to pipe up with a "what about me" when they were airing grievances.

There's a light novel about one of those cities, I haven't read it but the gist is that they get cut off from supplies and communication so the city is isolated and trapped after everyone outside of it escapes to the inner two walls.

They knew the Marlayians where a bunch of pacifist pansies since King's ability gets passed down generation by generation, said king has access to a Titan and is suppressing technology so nobody can reasonably beat him, and there was a bunch of zombies at the gate preventing normies from doing anything. They invaded for resources and the super Titan control powers, since technology was beginning to outpace their titans and once the world gets full WWII tech they're going to get shredded by aircraft. The Jews went along with this since if the titans arn't vital to the war effort they're going to get genocided.

I don't remember if this was ever brought up in the manga, but it wouldn't surprise me if Kruger killing all the soldiers who were carrying Grisha and the Restorationists to Paradis is what ultimately triggered it. Marley had control of 7 titans. They knew Paradis had the Founder. They hadn't been able to find the Attack, so it was probably a reasonable assumption on their part that Paradis had that too. So when a group of ships+hundreds of soldiers were all killed, they interpreted that as an act of aggression by Paradis, a sign that the King was maybe reconsidering that whole "renounce war" thing.

it's cheaper than 2d, but if theyre gonna put all that effort into doing it cg, they couldve made the cg look at least a bit better

That's part of what makes Willy's speech interesting. He's telling some hidden 'truths' but it's still being spun as propaganda. The whole thing is presented as if the first Paradis expedition to reclaim the founder was a result of the founder being stolen. He's not telling the world that Marley attacked before they even knew the founder had been stolen, not to 'save the world' but to maintain titan supremacy. He's such a sympathetic little liar squish ball.

The reason why the colossal titan in s2 and s3 was CG is because the colossals weakness is that he is slow, and in animation it is absolute hell to draw a slow moving object because you have to draw the details as its moving. As opposed to something fast where people can just see vague shapes and the brain will fill in the blanks if they recognize the characters.

Kinda like how you recognize this is a house even though you have never seen a house like this before. Because your brain operates on vague shapes instead of the whole thing, but it only works if it's fast so your eyes don't have time to realize how shit of a house this really is

That's why I can forgive madhouse for not going through all the effort of animating it since it would take super long for little payout. And they couldn't change the colossal either since his slowness was his core weakness that lead to his defeat.

also the brain is magical.
