US "The Squad" Megathread - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Talib Derangement Syndrome

I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Vaporize Congress and our country will actually work better.
Every time I see the UK Parliament try and figure out how to tax and regulate the lives of ordinary citizens or how to piss off social conservatives, I find myself very devoutly praying for a well-placed asteroid or two.

“The moment you bring a gun onto the House floor in violation of rules, you put everyone around you in danger,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “It is irresponsible. It is reckless. But beyond that, it is a violation of rules. You are openly disobeying the rules that we have established as a community, which means that you cannot be trusted to be held accountable to what we’ve decided as a community.

Something tells me that AOC either doesn’t know how guns work, or has never been to a gun range.

“I don't care if you accidentally set it off. I don't care if you intentionally set it off. I don't care if you don't set it off at all. You are endangering the lives of members of congress,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “And it is absolutely outrageous that we even have to have this conversation.”

”Endangering the lives of members of Congress“

You mean just like how Washington D.C. politicians endangered the lives of 25,000+ army men and women to endanger the life of a “highly popular”, 80+million voted in POTUS?

Only to then leave said soldiers stranded without nothing to sleep or eat on?

That's pretty rich, coming from a woman who would happily tear down any precedent and violate every norm of congressional procedure without a second's thought if it would get her an inch closer to 'socialism'.

Why does anyone need to bring a gun onto the floor of the House of Representatives in any case?
Before the American Civil War in 1856, Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina assaulted US Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts with a cane. Ever since, Representatives and Senators carried firearms for personal protection. Not all but some do. Considering that they're members of the fucking House of Representatives and Senate.

As a Britbong, I would have thought that it would be simpler to tell people ”don't fight on the floor of the House” rather than ”bring guns into the House”.

she tried to join in on the gamestop stocks shenanigans and ended up sperging out once it turns out both trump and Ted cruz also hated hedge fundies.

Why does AOC's tweet look like that?

Is this some new version of dark mode or something?
It's a discord embed.

It's funny how AOC manages to weasel out of taking a stand. "These damn Republicans! I would totally help out here but not with these guys! Sorry schmucks!"

Ah, thanks.

This is the problem with AOC and more generally speaking, the left. They say stuff like this because that's what their supporters say and agree with, not realising that the country isn't made up of 14 year olds on TikTok who are under the delusion that AOC is the Second Coming of Jesus or something equally as insane. Talking about how Ted Cruz ”nearly got you murdered” is alright if you're addressing your supporters, and I think she is very much playing to her own fans there, but she doesn't realise that to the 50 year old white guy in Iowa whose support she'll need if she ever does decide to run for President stuff like that is a massive turn off.

Except the left doesn't need to campaign on actions, they campaign on feelings and sentiment. They've not fixed anything or made anything better. They're continually fucking people over via taxes, regulations, laws, and trickle down effects while claiming the high road. All their policies enrich their cronies and fuck everyone else over, yet they're constantly given power to do more of the same.

And that's all very well if your supporters can live off sentiment and feelings. Unfortunately for AOC, the majority of Americans want something more tangible than her being MATI before they'll vote for her.

Both sides campaign on feelings and sentiment, thats not unique to the establishment democrats.

Democrats control all three branches of government - which they got by doing stunts exactly like this for nearly 2 years.

It's dogshit - but you can't blame her for doing it. It clearly works.

I see that AOC and MovieBob have some things in common.
  • Both are incredibly petty and immature manchildren.
  • Both spend all day tard raging on Twitter bashing republicans instead of doing their jobs.
  • Both are confrontational when dealing with criticism.
  • Both are lazy at their jobs.
Both are fucking godawful at video games.
