A lot of the dogs that supposedly detect stuff by sniffing are semi-hoax, semi-psyop. Like they take the "corpse sniffer dogs" and let them have a go. Obviously most dogs, even if not specially trained, will freak out if they smell a rotting dead body. If the dogs don't freak out, the coppers can say "well we super extra tried and nothing here, so we can move on now." Study after study shows that the dogs aren't actually good enough at what it's claimed they can do to justify spending the money on them. But it makes some old guy dog trainers and former horse girls feel good about themselves, so they humor them I guess.
Things I have invested in because of 2020-1 so far: a safe, fireproof bags, faraday cases, external hard drives for all my movies and music to be backed up on (that goes in the safe), hundreds of dollars in printing photographs off my digital devices, photo albums, a 35 mm camera and film, hard copies of out of print books, hard copies of based books I expect will soon be taken out of print, extra copies for friends, a new car I probably shouldn't have stretched to buy but which I could comfortably drive cross country in, and a dog with a really loud bark.

But does anybody have the scoop on the varying affect of these 3 new strains out of Africa, England and South America.
And i guess any indicator of what the general immunity is for getting 2 doses of the american made vaccines between Moderna and Pfizer.

Define "the scoop"? Do you mean the right think narrative we are being told to think? Or the truth that the virus is nothing in healthy,not fat under 65s, the vaccines havent been fully tested or even damn peer reviewed.
We do not know because we have only the word of the makers and gov.advisors who own shit loads of shares in them.
The only "scoop" is what they tell us, and the truth is we don't know as we cannot independently verify it.

Being as unbiased as I can, we don't know shit about these new substrains. We know there is varying reports, though IIRC no valid peer-reviewed publications yet, on their lethality - most of which demonstrate equally lethal or slightly less lethal; though at least one report claims the UK strain is slightly more lethal.
As for transmissibility, they are assumed more transmissible based upon the % of new cases which are ID'ed as the new substrains; however, what traits make them more transmissible are largely hypothetical at this point and the possibility exists the new substrains might simply be outcompeting the older substrains.
So far the vaccine should work on all strains except the South African substrain (which to me suggests a mutation in the protein spike structure).
From a biased prospective I the opinion that all but the South African substrains are just fear-mongering, and the South African substrain is a "fucking told you so!" from people who predicted a form/structure mutation (admittedly I had assumed this was unlikely for at least another 2-3 years) and claimed vaccines would be useless, and even then its still just fucking COVID-19, no worse.

Random thought, and maybe I'm wrong, but in the past (let's say 100+ years ago), how would people know there was a pandemic was going on? I'd assume they'd know there was a pandemic going on because they would have known multiple people (neighbors, acquaintances, family members) who had been stricken dead by whatever disease was going around.
I.e, people would know that a pandemic was going on because it would have affected them directly; they wouldn't need some authority figure to come along and say "there's a pandemic occurring, be afraid". When a cholera outbreak occurs, people don't need to be told "hey, everyone's getting sick and it's bad"; it's manifestly apparent that there's an outbreak going on because they can see the sick and dead people right in front of their faces.
When did that change? Personally I don't know anyone who has gotten very ill from this thing, or died. I do know someone (on the interwebs, mind you) whose 60+ year old step father passed away from the rona back in May. I think the issue maybe is that we've never experienced a true pandemic (even now), and have only experienced counterfeit pandemic scares, so we (collectively) don't know how to differentiate a scamdemic from the real thing.

Public health officials would declare there was one based on a lot of people dying of the same disease in a short period. And with shitty sanitation it would spread fast so people would know someone with it or who died of it. Their job was basically to declare quarantines and warn people, but you didn't need a lot of warning in those days because it was manifestly obvious that some awful disease was going around.
But back then there was some seriously nasty shit going around, not just periodic flu pandemics. Like the literal plague (Third Plague Pandemic) or how you'd have periodic outbreaks of shit like typhoid fever or smallpox which is just pure misery if you're lucky to survive. Permanent scars, reduced breathing function, blindness, all sorts of nasty shit. People were a lot more afraid of disease because disease was far worse.
There was zero need to sell people on a disease back then. It was either there or it wasn't, and if it wasn't then public health officials would be tarred and feathered or ridden out of town on a rail for needlessly spreading panic. There would be no "look, the flu is THIS MUCH WORSE this season, shut it all down THIS IS SUPER CEREAL" like today with multimillion dollar ad campaigns meant to sell you the disease being real as if they were selling any other product. Hell, it's almost like a megachurch paying for PSAs reminding you to praise Jesus and remember to go to church and tithe lots of money, especially their church. "Yes, citizen, accept Branch Covidianism, wear the two masks to show you are a follower of the true faith!"

Oh, my 92-year-old mother-in-law is being vaccinated Monday. Lives at her home. Her health is pretty fragile, but they are going ahead and getting her vaccinated. Told my wife I was waiting two years, making sure the shit is safe. NO trust in the government whatsoever.

Moreno estimated the county will need roughly 514,000 doses of the vaccines that are currently available, which require two doses to take effect, to achieve herd immunity just among the county's adult population.
Another 80 percent of the county's children would also need to be vaccinated, he said. To date, the vaccines currently available have only been authorized to people age 16 and up.
"In order to speed this up, we really do need more than 2,000-to-4,000 doses per week coming into Monterey County," Moreno said. Roughly 32,000 county residents are currently eligible for the vaccine by virtue of being health care workers, long-term care facility and in-home care workers and long-term care and nursing facility residents.
The county also has 38,660 residents age 75 and older, who are eligible for vaccinations following updated guidance earlier this month from federal and state officials. Between Dec. 8, 2020, and Jan. 23, 2021, 13,402 county residents received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to Moreno.
To enhance its vaccination efforts once it begins to receive more doses, the county plans to open point-of-distribution clinics or POD clinics. The size and location of POD clinics around the county will scale up as vaccine supply increases, Moreno said, but could include hospitals and outpatient clinics, school campuses, libraries, community centers, large public spaces and event centers.
With the county's current per week allocation, POD clinics will only have a maximum of 500 appointments and will only take place at hospitals, for now.
Ultimately, the county is negotiating or has agreed to POD clinic locations at 32 locations around the county and 91 locations overseen by the Monterey County Office of Education.
"We want to make sure that we cover all the areas necessary to make sure that all residents have a fair opportunity to get the vaccine," said Mike Derr, a logistics lead for the county's COVID-19 response. "We want to make sure we have sites ready to go when called upon."
