Not to dox myself, but I worked on one in late-2000s to early-2010s. The rules engine was retarded top secret. You'd have to surrender your phone and be scanned before walking in the building -- and I didn't even work on the rules engine, I worked on optimizing an ancillary system for some quant magic preprocessing.

They also had guys walk around with those Glow-in-the-dark devices to scan for wifi and cell signals.

Imo we’re seeing a shift because of the internet. In a way it’s akin to the sacking of Baghdad by the Mongols or the fall of Constantinople to the Turks. It marked the end of an empire and the rise of a new power. What happened last week was decades in the making and in retrospect I’d argue it was inevitable once the masses adopted the internet and social media. The curbstomping of Melvin Capital won’t mean the end of all hedge funds but it marks a change, the retail investor -the entrepreneur and part time investor- will be a factor that must be considered. Now that the world has seen that the Emperor has no clothes it’s only going to embolden more to act. We’re going to see more getting involved, not less. Those organizations that realize and adapt will survive but those that are too rigid and set in their old ways will be buried with the past.

The programs that generate these strings of text, like the waifu generator, are not going to "evolve" into a true consciousness. Their algorithms can recombine elements into patterns that have characteristics of other patterns, and this can be done based on patterns that evolve over time, but this action is unfathomably far from constituting a true self-aware intelligence. Our knowledge of how consciousness even works is severely lacking, let alone how to synthesize it. Machine learning algorithms have made impressive progress in the last decade but what they do is nothing like actual thought, and it's a dirty secret in the business that most algos applied to real-world tasks tend to frequently "go off the rails" and need to be reset by a human.

Here's what you need to know about Maher.

It was an incredibly out of place, really stupid fucking segment, very weird... until Based Dilbert Merchant pointed out a day or two later that a professional media manipulator had gotten the codeword "Dark" out to use against Trump, and it was probably effective because of how unusual and visual it was. In other words: Maher got direct talking points from the Clinton campaign.

Then there was that bit when Assange came on Maher's show via skype voice call and pointed out Maher had given a shitload of money to Clinton, only to have Maher sit there sputtering and trying awkwardly to change the subject.

Professional software engineer here that somewhat frequently deals with AI... I know what you're getting at but the two situations really aren't comparable at all. The main difference is that life forms evolved by their ability to change their inputs and outputs (adaptation) and modern AI does not really do that at all. Even the most sophisticated systems in the world are basically just tweaking numbers to better fulfill probability calculations. Then HR slaps a pretty looking interface on it to make it look smarter than it actually is.

Honestly most of how this stuff works is available for everybody to research. The hardest part is understanding the math theory behind it, but the mechanisms of how it actually executes are usually incredibly simple and I think it would clear a lot up for you. Probably just find some good youtube videos.
