Okay, I have to confess, I originally stopped reading just before Levi's backstory because it was the last chapter released at the time and I just forgot to go back. Should I at least check that part out in the anime?
Actually yes. It is one of the most beautifully animated segments not just in AoT, but anime in general. And its pretty much before the story goes to shit so you can just fully enjoy it.

Honestly the anime itself is probably the best way to experience Attack on Titan since the anime is vastly superior to the manga since the animators polish up many things from the manga, and change certain arcs such as the Uprising Arc which was the one with Levi's backstory which was really well animated.

I would say yes, you should. Like everyone else has said, it is a very beautiful, well-animated, and well-adapted sequence, and one that is definitely worth watching. It'll make you actually feel bad for Levi.

Until you, you know, remember how everything is his fault, but still.

Isayama's art is ass ugly and he gets lazier and lazier as the series goes on to the point where his mistakes were misinterpreted as continuity errors. I honestly wouldn't bother with the manga. The anime itself is done beautifully, which is why it was so popular. Ignoring the clusterfuck, you can just watch the pretty pictures. Until season 4 where it just goes back to average.

Despite the switch and the CG, Wiz seems to be doing ok with it. I haven't watched it, since I fucking loathe the Marley section of the story but I've seen bits and pieces.

AoT seriously needed more moments like that. Since AoT started off as a horror story, it was character driven, so you could explore a lot with each character, have them face dilemmas and things like that. The reason why I get MATI is because the idea and some of the execution is so fucking good and then he just abandons it completely to be plot focused and it completely ruins what came before.

There's really so much you can do with the setting and to just reduce it to a discount WWII/Game of Thrones imitation does it a massive disservice. It just feels like "I HAVE A MESSAGE FUCK THE STORY" and he went that way. It really does sadden me because you can go in directions like Titans were bio-weapons of an advanced civilization that went out of control ala the Reapers and we've been waging war against some who have become sentient and there's high technology outside the world. Or the world itself is some weird purgatory by a mad God (like a ton of Manga love to do) which has a strange outside environment. Or you just never explain it, it gets misty outside the walls and seems to go on forever, there's just no end to it. Or you could have the story existing as an eternal time loop due to Ymir and the first titan trying to control the population. Or you have those animal titans like you see in the opening for season 2/3 and you've got tribes on the outside vying for control, and this walled city represents a major threat because the most powerful titan got abducted.

Like there's just so much ground to cover and he went for a boring war story with Kaijus. That's why I get so pissed. Because he HAD something good and trashed it, not because of publishers or editors, but his own inflated ego. There's so much interesting shit and its way more interesting to see small humans battle these monstrosities. Maybe with PATHS being the human's only hope or something like that. I get so many good ideas from the setting its crazy. Even within the setting there's a lot of characterization ala Levi you can do, but it just isn't because it abandons it for a terrible purpose.

So when I get worked up about this, it really isn't as a fanboy but as a storyteller because the setting and concept are so rich and he just fucking did nothing with it. And that's the part that pisses me off.

Yeah Iseyama openly admitted his art was shit and would rather have something “memorably bad”, like he occasionally draws some good stuff either when it’s disturbing but normal scenes just aren’t well drawn.

As for the anime it is much more beautiful to look at and both WIT (who did seasons 1-3), and currently Mappa have done a good job with it animation wise with the worst complaint about it being the use of CG at times.

My issue is that AoT no longer being character driven would've been fine if the plot didn't suck ass. You'd think what's currently happening in-series wouldn't be boring, but it somehow fucking is. Everyone with the single exception of Pieck is a fucking idiot who's seems screwed no matter despite the fact that it shouldn't be like that. The world of AoT makes no fucking sense, and can only work if the following is true:

The vast majority of the entire world are so hateful, petty, sadistic, and/or apathetic, and cowardly that they are perfectly fine with the mass torture, starvation, and genocide of an entire race because of what happened to some pigs over 2000 years ago.

I'm sorry, but I just don't fucking buy it.

Even if it wasn't for the pigs, I still wouldn't buy it. I know I occasionally get made fun of for this on here, but I genuinely do not believe this is true both in-series and irl. There's no fucking way. If not for the fact that humanity isn't that evil, but for the fact people would get bored after a while and find some new victim to target. People would move on after two millennia. This would be like Italians hating modern Greeks for what the ancient ones did to Troy, and hating them enough for them to wanting genocide them all.

That is just not how things work, and the fact Isayama tries to argue that it is even when he had no actual logical reason to, (again, he could've easily just had that not be the case, and just have Eren incorrectly think that) is just fucking insulting to me. That and the fact that he decided to do it in the stupidest, most contrived, and boring way possible.

Tl;dr: AoT not being character driven would've been fine if the plot didn't turn into some racist edgelord's stupid, and boring WWII fanfic.

Well...humanity kind of is that evil really. Look at the shenanigans between Israel and Palestine to this day. Same with China and the Uighurs as well. You can prime anyone to be a complete fucking retard and hate an entire race of people based on the past. Hell, look at the DNC faggotry right now, gotta make sure those gosh darn Tumpers never get to own property or money now or Hitler will ressurect dontyaknow.

People are stupid and easy to manipulate if you got the time and money. But still AoT blew its load as a story years ago and is still awful.

No, it's fucking not. Parts of it might be, but the entirety of it is not. Humanity wouldn't have gotten this far if that was true, and you know it. For the entire world to hate an entire race for over 2000 years for something so fucking stupid and trivial is fucking bullshit, and the fact that people are still trying to argue that it's not is fucking pathetic.

These arguments are fucking stupid even as someone who defends the series, what China does with the Ulghurs has been condemned by most of the world and the stuff between Israel and Palestine is not something where the world wants to passionately kill one side.

Also that fucking example about the DNC is just laughably stupid and you should kill yourself for thinking that’s a good example to justify why most of the world of AOT is perfectly okay with killing an entire race.

The part I always found the most atrocious is the complete and utter asspull that "Then the king made everyone forget about the outside world". Like, holy shit this is so fucking monumentally stupid and makes ABSOLUTELY no fucking sense. But, it HAS to exist in order for the god awful Marley plot to ever conceivably happen. Which only shows how unplanned this whole shitshow was from the beginning.

I remember there being a non-canon manga made where there was another city in the world where an entire civilization lived in a massive tree to escape the titans and used samurai swords with the air gear. It was not perfect, but the concept of multiple civilizations living in different protected settlements to escape the threat of the titans was so fucking cool. That's ruined now for Iseyama's nonsensical "hate and war bad" message.

I will just play a Kojima game if I wanted that message rammed down my throat, at least it would be fun to play.

You're also neglecting one important fact: Proximity. These people are extremely close to one another. Even if it were Ethnic cleansing like in Africa, they operate on the same land, sometimes even in the same country. Racial hatred and genocidal punishments are not far and away, they're extremely close. They're driven by ideology, sometimes religion and sometimes politics.

Marley wins a complete victory. They have these people at their mercy. If they desired, they could put every one of them to the sword, but instead they banished them. Far away from them on an island where they couldn't generate the numbers to pose a threat. Yet, Marley still tortures them for no fucking reason.

Look, if Marley wanted them dead, they could do it. They're not going to constantly waste time and resources to torture an entire people. Either they're eliminated or in complete submission. They're not close enough for Marley to justify its actions. They don't even share the same land, not to mention they're on an island which would limit their resources in any sort of conflict.

Peoples in history have been tortured, but again, there was proximity. And they would completely eliminate them if they got the chance. They wouldn't be kept around.

So why does Marley do this? Why even bother risking provocation with them if they're so dangerous? Why let them develop advanced weaponry? If you're doing this and hate them THAT much: Why are they fucking alive? If Marley acted the way it does, Paradis would have been genocided a very long time ago. Typically when there's a dispora or an exile, that's it. Conflict is over. The people you hate are long gone and far away from you. You don't travel and fuck with them constantly and risk provoking a war. That's why they were exiled in the first fucking place.

Marley is so comically evil and sadistic, from its men to its women and its children, it is quite literally impossible to muster up feelings for any of them when they're getting fucking slaughtered. Their actions make no fucking sense. Either they hate them so much and they're so dangerous that they'd kill all of them or they'd just exile them and have a permeant blockade around the island like some countries do. Instead, if Paradis was a bear, you had a guy with an elephant gun and a tranquilizer gun. But instead of killing it or sending it to the zoo, you constantly beat it with a stick and then you get shocked when you are mauled to death. You were torturing the bear, you fucking idiot, you get what you deserve. That's why in history, you either killed everybody or exiled them, so you wouldn't fucking have reprisals.

So Marley's actions make no sense, fail to be sympathetic and there's just no way that they're equivalent to Paradis/Eldia in any respect. The whole Marley angle is so mind-numbingly fucking stupid I honestly cannot care for what Eren is doing to civilians. Because they're not people, they're just caricatures of them.

Well, obviously you need a good plot. Which AoT most certainly doesn't have.

Oh, its completely retarded. There's absolutely no way it makes any sort of sense. It is so contradictory to human behavior. Like I wrote above: They'd either all be dead by now or just living in exile, ignorant of the wider world. There is no point. They're too far away from each other to be viewed in this light and even if they had camps and shit, why aren't those people just strung up and tortured daily?

Marley is retarded and no matter how you slice it, Eren is just right. Because the entirety of Marley are sadistic fucking retards. Like how am I supposed to feel bad he stomped on a city or some shit?

Isayama's main problem is this: If Marley simply exiled the Eldians, there would be no titans on the island. You don't want to remind them of how powerful they could be and figure it out. So no Titans, no story. And if Marley DID hate the Eldians this much, they'd already all be dead. There wouldn't be any left.

Since Marley obviously will never ever leave Eldians alone and don't seem to understand diplomacy since they're all fucking sadists, then yes, the only option is to fucking kill all of them. Normally this would be unreasonable. Since the story is shit, it is the only reasonable outcome. Other than a total retcon.

The problem obviously arises is that no society, rational or otherwise would behave like Marley, so you can't relate to them or understand them. There is no historical or cultural analog. So there's no way to see it from their side, because if you step into Marley's shoes, they're all bug-fuck crazy sadists. The only way you MIGHT have POSSIBLY justified it, is if Marley was a total theocracy and it had something like ten thousand years of punishment for the Eldians or something. But that doesn't fit with Isayama's fucking retarded, idiotic, World War 2 story. God AoT's story is such fucking trash.

I mean the Eldians tortured by Marley are the ones who lived on the island and King Cuck essentially told those in power to send titans to Paradis so no one would want to leave the walls. The Eldians they kept were also used as weapons to have Warrior Candidates so they can oppress everyone else to become the most powerful while the other non-warrior Eldians were used as cannon fodder either as soldiers to die in battle, and thanks to Zeke to be turned into titans to attack enemies. Marley kept Eldians to be used for cannon fodder and had the whole Warrior program promising "Honorary Marleyan" status to the Warrior and their family to get more people wanting to work for them. They only ever tortured the Eldians that lived at their land while the Titans were sent to Paradis as part of King Cuck's vow to leave them there.

As for the Paradis side, it didn't help that before the Uprising Arc happened, the entire Paradis government was complying with King Cuck's orders and killing citizens who were trying to see what was in the outside world, and halting any technological advancement.

Marley went whole "Kill all Eldians" and to invade Paradis because of two factors:

1. When Eren's dad was going to be killed, a mole for Marley had the power of the Attack Titan and used it to attack Marleyan soldiers which was seen as King Cuck's vow no longer being in hold and due to the decline in the power of the Titan's, Marley wanted to invade Paradis to regain the Founding Titan so they can still have control over the world.

2. Eren got the Founding Titan which led to panic of using the Rumbling to destroy the entire world and was also used as a way to get every country to side with Marley since they were decimated by the world developing Anti-Titan technology, Eren's rampage only made Marley look right to the world since before that there were doubts about Paradis being seen as a threat.

tl;dr There is an explanation for why Marley let Eldia go in exile and sent titans to them (Thanks to King Cuck feeling very guilty about his own race and actions), didn't kill all Eldians (free cannon fodder for war and propaganda to make them enslaved to their leaders), and only went to attack the Island for other reasons (Pre-Timeskip it was to get the Founding Titan due to decline in power and quell a potential threat with that Soldier who used the Attack Titan to attack the harbor, and Post-Timeskip it was to prevent the Rumbling and gain worldwide sympathy).

But to be honest Attack on Titan could be summarized as this

1612367172610.png

EDIT: Actually thinking about it, since the last of the oppression of Eldia on Marley was 100 years before the series started and the lore said certain things about the Founding Titan, why the hell didn't King Cuck just change the biology of all Eldians to never turn into titans if he felt so guilty because of it's terrible history. Wouldn't taking away the power of the titans fix everything?

Seriously King Cuck's actions are honestly the biggest plothole of the series and it doesn't help Iseyama gave no defining powerset to the Founding Titan beyond doing whatever it wants as long as it affects those of Eldian Ancestry.

Well that and the power of a God was in a random cave that a slave could just fall into and was NEVER ONCE FOUND before that.

Its like Marley is that one dimensional "bad" character in every third rate shitty power fantasy anime who solely exists to get the shit kicked out of them by the protagonist. Except Isayama arbitrarily decided that the the protagonist is the bad guy for kicking the shit out them.

I completely forgot about King Cuck because he's so fucking terrible of a character plot device my brain just erased him.

Honestly I was looking back on it and King Cuck is essentially responsible for most of the problems in the series.

The Eldians were an empire waging war (and oppressed the world at large with titans) for thousands of years with many of the Titan Shifter Royal houses constantly fighting each other. King Cuck felt bad for what the Eldian Empire was doing and decided to fuck off to a different island with lots of Eldians and conspired with the War Hammer Titan's group to come up with an urban legend and due to King Cuck's absence, the Marleyans rose up and took the power of 7 titans. This shit was 100 years before the series began and justifiably the world wanted revenge for centuries of torment by the Eldians.

What makes King Cuck a fucking idiot is that the Founding Titan can do whatever, so why didn't he just disable or alter the biology of Eldians to take away the power of the titans especially when this was in the timeline as something that happened which showed that the Founding Titan is capable of altering the biology of Eldians.

Year c. 240

An epidemic leads to a significant drop in the worldwide population. With the power of the Founding Titan, the King of Eldia alters the biology of the Subjects of Ymir to give them immunity, and no Subject of Ymir dies to the epidemic.[16]

King Cuck basically fucked off to Paradis with the many Eldians, killed off all Asians, made the walls, altered everyone's memories to enforce the status quo Attack on Titan had of "Humanity being driven off by Titans" by getting Marley to send mindless titans to Paradis to make sure no one has the incentive to escape.

Legit if King Cuck wanted to end the fighting he could've tried to become a benevolent king instead of this autistic bullshit which led to justifiable revenge from the world at large because he hated his own race he wanted to kill everyone because of what Nine Assholes did with special titan powers. in the past. King Cuck's accomplishments resulted in the world being oppressed again by the Marleyans who now have titan powers, torturing of his own race, and 100 years later a guy went against everything he did because he thought the best solution to stop the Eldian Empire's tyranny was to fuck off like a coward and torture his own race.

Honestly with all of this in mind it honestly justifies the whole "World hates Eldians" mentality if King Cuck didn't bother to atone for the Empire's mistakes beyond giving Marley power to control the world with the very things he hated which makes less sense given the Founding Titan has the ability to see into the future with what Eren is capable of doing.

tl;dr The real problem with the writing in the post-timeskip stuff is not the world hating the Island people, but some major cuckold ruining everything by presenting a non-solution to stop tyranny and oppression, and Iseyama not giving a clear powerset for the Founding Titan that just presents plotholes.

Except Isayama arbitrarily decided to make that the protagonist is the bad guy for kicking the shit out them, and the entire world
FTFY.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Having Eren just wipe out the KoM would've been fine given the context the of situation, if not extremely morally dubious. It's him genociding the entire world for ever increasingly flimsier reasons that is the problem, and always has been.

Apparently literally the entire world treats Eldians even worse then Marley does. Marley is the only one interested into manipulating them into weapons, the other countries... Well, I don't actually know what they do, cuz the world building is fucking shit, but it's bad enough that Eldian families like Udo's immigrate to Marley for a better life.
