My poutine is weak but it seems like labelle knows dictionary French only. The grammar and spelling are usually okay but the wording seems soulless and stilted.

That's how it seems to me. I don't speak fluent poutine by any means but there's a massive difference between what I've seen people say and how Labelle writes.

It's odd because you'd expect someone called Guillaume Labelle to speak decent French.

Quebec residents speak a weird kind French dialect unique to them which probally makes speaking true French more difficult since he’d get confused with correct terms if you’re used to saying certain things,

I assumed, based on his name, his accent that the fact that he claimed the AM characters were all French speakers, that French was his first language. Weird.

As someone from Québec who studies literature, I think it comes down to reading - both French books and Québécois books. Reading allows you to understang how ideas are formulated, how to construct a scenario using narrative tension, how characters relate and interact with eachother...

Regarding Guillaume's use of French, I'd like to note that very, very few novels are published in joual or in typical "patois" (and when I say very few, I mean maybe one or two per year, by some avant-garde pretentious publisher). When we write, we use correct French grammar, but of course we have our regional turns of phrase. As such, it's really when we talk that we sound different - I've spoken to several French exchange students, and they claim that we speak a bit slower, and in a tone that sounds more nasal and more casual. Interestingly, and this is someting that a lot of people don't know, French people borrow a lot of English - not only in their everyday speech, but in their writing too. We often make fun of the way they use "parking", "shopping", "ticket", "email", "weekend", "cupcake", "pancake", "best-seller", etc. Not that we don't borrow from English, but we are incentivized to use an already existing French word, or to create a neologism if needed. So yes, Québec French sounds weird at first, but it's not that peculiar.

As for Guillaume, I think he has no idea how to write a voice that sounds genuine and natural. He obviously doesn't read and has no ties with any form of classical culture. All he knows is the Internet, which explains why he relies so much on memes and catchphrases. It's no surprise his characters all end up sounding like his mouthpieces or like some quirky, vapid Internet avatars. Guillaume once tried to make his readers believe that his characters had other interests beside gender stuff (Stephie likes reading, I think?), but it felt incredibly forced and never came up again in a meaningful conversation.

I'd assume that's because you have Loi 101, the OQLF and the CSLF whereas France never protected its language in that way and so used a lot more Anglicisms.
