I stumbled across this old thread on /r/Osana (archive), a Discord bot dev criticises Joel for his poor programming skills regarding Midoribot.
I don't know if any of the critiques hold any weight, I've no experience in the field. But it does sound a bit insane that a single command was worth 3gig.

discord.py does handle ratelimits to my knowledge. The 1 second wait is unnecessary but what I would pay more attention to is why the fuck are you enumerating all users on the server to update their roles? Discord offers plenty of ways to avoid requesting large amounts of data, such as events that are sent when a user joins/leaves a server, when they update their nickname/username/profile picture etc.That 3GB figure is almost certainly a result of shitcode that stores way too much data in way too large data structures and never lets the garbage collector release it (is he storing info about every single member on the server or something?).
There is no need for a bot to ever ping anyone. It doesn't matter in the ban command I guess since you'll already be gone from the server, but it's just unnecessary, and displaying the nickname/username + discriminator is good enough (I would personally display the ID there as well though). You can work around this though, if you use rich embeds to make your bot's output nicer, you can also put user mentions in certain parts of the embed (e.g. description) and have it display as a mention but not ping (notify) the user.
Asynchronous execution isn't really multitasking, it's cooperative (e.g. start task 1, start task 2, work on task 1 until it's half way done, work on task 2 until it's half way done, finish task 1, finish task 2 in order as opposed to running task 1 and task 2 at the same time), it is especially useful in cases like this though where you might be waiting for rate limits and there is no reason why the bot can't just continue processing other shit while waiting for the rate limit to expire.
TL;DR pretty much all of the points are valid, so I don't know why he would harbor a pedophile when you could get a skid to write you a better bot for $5.

What I find interesting about that list of "here's everything horrible that happened to me this year" is how the Reddit Fuckup is portrayed; it's not "someone got into my email and then fucked around with everything connected to that email", but "someone hacked my Reddit account". By sticking with that angle, it helps Alex defend his parting of ways with tinyBuild to anyone not in the know since if tinyBuild wasn't doing anything for him then he was right in his ways to cut ties. It also implies that the email of Alex blackmailing tinyBuild is fabricated without outright stating so since Alex doesn't mention that it was actually his email that was broken into.
Essentially, as per usual with Alex, it's lies and lies of omission. "If everyone were praising me the demo would've been completed sooner!", no, that's not really how that works. "I could copypaste the rivals and be done with it, but that would be a very unsatisfying game!", Alex, the game is already very unsatisfying and it's not getting any better. I'm not even downloading builds anymore to see how unfun everything is because it'll be essentially unchanged from the last time I took a glance. And it's not the "bullies" celebrating bullying you into finally completing Osana; they were laughing their asses off that it took a competitor that crashed and burned in record time to finally get you off your butt and release the demo.
Actions have consequences, and Alex really doesn't seem to be too happy with what's come home to roost.
