I think the biggest problem is that its just...boring. The stakes are incredibly low because we have no attachment to the world or the characters. I mean, the resolution is extremely simplistic right now without any major surprises if it goes according to the spoilers (they blow Eren up and Reiner stops him from healing).
Then Eren gets to monologue at how he just wanted to help blah blah blah its all he knew how to do etc. etc. and then just dies. The last chapter is an uneasy peace with some retarded dialogue and story about the world and how its recovered and the characters wondering if Eren was right in the end since there are rumblings of war still. The last panel is just Grisha having Eren and because he's outside the concentration camp he was free already. The End.

Back when the series first started I liked this idea a lot. But now? It just feels like the ultimate cop-out.
It just makes all the Marleyan, racism, and WWII bullshit an even bigger waste of time, and I'm sorry, but I do not think Isayama is anywhere that intelligent to pull it off. That 4chan alien theory was scary in how much it made sense, but then you remember that Isayama is an idiot who can't think that far ahead, or include details that small, and concise on purpose, or without at least retconning them somewhere down the line. Other things in the series wouldn't happen if he could, or at the very least, become even more inexcusable for that to be true.
The 4chan alien theory is exactly the same as people misinterpreting Isayama's shitty art, and continuity errors as anything other than what they are-fucking mistakes and coincidences. It's a fantastic theory that makes a lot sense, and for it to be true would require a lot of intelligence, planning, and forethought, but Isayama has proven time, and again that he has none of that.
If the theory is correct, than I refuse to believe that he actually came up with it, and would instead be much more inclined to believe that he just copied the actual theory from the internet after he accidentally stumbled ass-backwards into it with his terrible art, and storytelling.
I know the original ending for AoT had something similar to this what with it being like
The Mist and all, that doesn't mean the same ending would work now what with all the extra bullshit that gone thrown into this series. Not to even mention how all of this would just lead to further questions and older ones just conveniently never being answered.
Tl;dr: I'd rather have a shitty, boring ending than one blatantly stolen from the fandom that only works because Isayama's bad storytelling and art could be misinterpreted for intentional genius.
To be fair he kinda do go through quite a bit of shit. Watching everyone he loves die. Literally coming to terms of eating his own dad. Only realizing you and your entire people are just political tools for outside power to where their own lifes are meaningless. Say what you want about the series but I wont exactly be skipping down the street learning all that
Double-posting, but I have acknowledged that
multiple times in this thread. I know this very well, and the problem is that the actual series fucking doesn't.
The actual series bends over backwards to not acknowledge this, and instead focus on all the other absolute bullshit in the world, and not the actual factors that led Eren to this point. It would rather piss about with pigs, and absolutely insane levels of hatred, racism, stupidity, sadism, and pettiness than dare suggest that Eren's own personal trauma, and mistreatment at the hands of SC and his life behind the Walls could be the cause of his current behavior.
Not even Eren himself brings it up, and that's why I find it so inexcusable and fucking retarded. That's why I hate it, and his current character.
Let's blame the whole world, and not the actual fucking people responsible like Levi, or Erwin. Let's do absolutely fucking insane mental gymnastics to make this genocide ending happen when the reason for it was there all along, and right in plain sight. Let's make it a shitty WWII fanfic when you could've made it about an amazing story mentally disturbed young man who was traumatized and tortured into being a monster.
Let's throw it all away for something completely stupid, and that no one asked for.
