This guy doesn't know shit about music, let alone metal. Hearing him whine and gripe about that "cowardly fucking heroin addict who abandoned his wife and newborn child" makes me feel grateful that grunge killed off some of his favorite bands because if Razor had his ways, metal fans would be listening to crap like Stryper, Dangerous Toys and Firehouse instead of Alice in Chains, Pantera and White Zombie.
Also, his belief that the whole "grunge killed glam metal" overnight was bullshit because a crappy hair metal band beat Nirvana in an award is just mind-numbingly stupid. Like really? How does an award somehow reflect the music world of its time? If he doesn't like Nirvana, that's his opinion - I have friends and family members who love hair metal and despise grunge. But to put down Nirvana and their impact because Firehouse won an award is like saying that Milli Vanilli were better than Public Enemy because the former won a Grammy and the latter weren't even nominated.
Not the Crue since they had already adopted the pop-metal sound starting with Girls, Girls, Girls, but Guns N' Roses definitely made the entire hair metal scene look like a laughing stock. Their music was a strong combination of blues rock, hard rock, punk rock, rock & roll and, in the case of the Illusions records, progressive rock and heavy metal, and their lyrics were far more nightmarish, dangerous and honest. In fact, some glam metal bands from that era (i.e. Poison, Cinderella, Skid Row) had to alter their sound and image, which is why Brett Michaels had a bandana on his head, Cinderella's next albums sounded like Aerosmith, the Stones and Humble Pie, and Skid Row's second record ditched away the pop-metal sound for a heavier, more aggressive approach.
Also, you're right about The Black Album being a huge deal in 1991. Not only was it Metallica's first #1 album in the Billboard charts and helped bring them into the mainstream, but it also impacted heavy metal, which was now getting slower, groovier and murkier, more akin to Black Sabbath's first four albums than the faster hardcore punk sound of Dead Kennedys, Discharge and Black Flag. Simply put, The Black Album played a role in opening the door for alternative metal bands like White Zombie, Tool, Corrosion of Conformity and Pantera, the same way Nevermind played a role in opening the door for alternative rock bands Sonic Youth, the Breeders, Screaming Trees and Hole.
