Borderlands (1, 2, 3, The Pre-Sequel, TftB)

So..I am doing a mission where A black man..is having a holographic (totally not)monkey search out treasure for me..

He says

"If I had an army of -not monkeys- I could take over a planet
the Hologram Ooks..and he Ooks back at it.

Seems..a little bit racist to have a black man Ooking at Not-Monkeys.

So the Krieg DLC wasn't shitty and it was longer and more entertaining than Bounty of Blood in my opinion. Maybe I'm just a sucker for Krieg, though. Fuck were the bosses tedious on Mayhem 3. Maybe I just can't find the right combination to shred through enemies on Mayhem 3 but both the second-to-last and the final bosses of Fustercluck were so long that the bosses themselves quit doing their gimmicks because they were undoing our progress.

Also yeah, I noticed the legendary drop rate, too. When the game came out initially, it seemed fair but ever since, like, the second DLC, legendaries have been practically thrown at my group. I thought at first it was because I went down that one Guardian tree but I don't think that's the case anymore.

I disagree. I watched some playthroughs (not giving Randy anymore money) and a friend playing it: what a turd this third DLC is.
It's just a knock-off Claptastic Voyage and the short interaction with Maya, way to shit on the fans.

No hiding the census on Steam: 35% rating. Gearbox predictably shit the bed on this one. The other DLC is also mostly awful. But good news everyone, a day after its release they announced the new Fl4K skill tree. ARE YOU EXCITED?!
Paywalled content of course, because fuck you we are not going to make a new Vault Hunter when we can do it cheaper.

Still disappointed, wished the last DLC would have some turn around, but nah.

I approve somewhat of the droprate, grinding in a solo/coop game with no proper PVP is annoying as hell. I like the droprates as they were in BL1, BL2 was horrendous.

So like I'm still trying to understand the series (mainly cuz they announced the film)

Like...its a fps RPG action game right? It says loot shooter. So it's not like....lots of exploration and stuff? Are there characters you talk to? It looks like you get characters popping up in your HUD screen telling you stuff. I heard there is not much story?

The first one has a bare-bones story. It is an FPS looter shooter in that you're always getting different guns to replace the ones you have - that was the big draw for the games because of randomized stats. It's a hybrid of open-world with smaller, more linear levels and there are things to collect though they're usually for a mission. There are several NPCs that you talk to to get missions along with bounty boards. The writing was sparse but gave this feeling that everyone on Pandora was just weird and crazy and that was how it was.

The second one is where they tried to pick up the story elements and attempted a flowing narrative with big characters and important stuff. How well it worked depends on your interpretation because the gameplay is still the same, but improved; more guns, each weapon manufacturer makes them unique in some aspect, more characters, bigger environments, etc. The gunplay and gameplay is fun if you like that sort of thing and starting with 2, there are little side challenges that you can complete for bonus XP and a mechanic called a "Badass rank" which improves your stats across all characters. The writing is generally improved; it's more complex but still funny and well-delivered though the parts where they try to be all "this is serious" is stupid.

The Pre-Sequel was also story-heavy but it fucking sucked because they weren't the same writers for 2 and they didn't know what they were doing. There was the new zero-gravity mechanic for the moon setting though so it added a lot of vertical options to the gameplay.

3 was a continuation for that flowing narrative but it also sucked. The gameplay and gunplay was the best it's been though so play the game, skip the story. The writing was piss-poor, they fucked up some popular characters for new ones no one likes and the villains were wasted compared to 2 and TPS' Handsome Jack.

Hmmmm. I'm still on the fence. It seems like it's more for multi-player?

Is it more similar to Perfect Dark and Goldeneye? It looks like you pick one of the characters at the start and each one reacts differently in their dialogue ala Saints Row.

It's definitely more fun with friends.

And yeah, in TPS and 3 the character you pick reacts differently to dialogue but it doesn't change anything majour, like story beats or mission results

I stopped playing B3 after the returning Bloody Harvest event last year. I didn't hate the event itself, but there was a bug that prevented the final reward from being unlocked, and this was a Day 1 bug. For the entire month that the event was up for, it wasn't fixed and those unlucky players to have characters affected by it received no compensation.

That just told me that Gearbox didn't give a flying fuck about keeping up good appearances on supporting the game; all that mattered to them was making a quick buck on the next-gen upgrades and nothing else. So fuck them...

As for a movie? It would have to be a wholesale Mad Max copy with a focus on treasure hunting. The story fell apart when it became Siren Wars.

I ordered the collection. I'll be going solo but I've heard its still enjoyable. Sorry for all the questions lol.

The cel shading looks interesting. I saw Cate Blanchett is playing the redheaded woman in the film adaptation. I assume they're making her older? Unless the characters ancient?

I also read Troy baker and the other actor fought on Twitter with the gearbox ppl over getting fired lol. What a mess

Maybe its fitting its me that sort of necros the thread but I gotta ask.

Does anyone honestly gives a shit about Borderlands 3? Im replaying B2 and TPS with a close friend of mine and we are having a blast and we do intend on playing Tales (or rather me while I stream it from the PS4) and then we intend to get Borderlands 3 just for the sake of some closure and because he wants to experience B3 himself before "Passing any judgement" even if Im warning him that "its not very gooood...."

Borderlands 3 feels such lackluster finale for a trilogy that started off a bit meh but really gained traction with time (mostly given the amazing writing from 2 and some of the Presequel and tales). I legit dont want to hate 3, I really dont. But everything in 3 just feels like a constant slap in the face, especially since we invested so much in these universe and characters. It kind of feels like nothing has any payoff and payoffs we do have feel like playing second fiddle to what they DO have.

The new villains are okay-ish at best and cringy at worst. Dont come close to Handsome Jack...and look, I didnt expect them to do so but I also didnt expect them to make my eye roll so many times. They are basically cultist mixed with obnoxious livestreamers (like mixing piss with turds).

The gameplay was fun but its hard to improve on a cycle of gameplay so simple and yet satisfying.

And one must wonder, what is there to really explore with further sequels? The series feels kind of done, doesnt it? There isnt demands for B4 because B3 kind of killed all interest we had in it.

I wonder if Gearbox is aware of that and that they have argurably killed the last franchise people cared about from their catalog.

I actually forgot BL3 exists!

Pre Sequel is better. and 2 is just perfection.

I'd argue that they didn't realise how badly they fucked up by killing all the characters everyone loves and trying to make the narrative about Ava, given their surprise that Ava wasn't more well-received.

No one gives a shit about Ava. EVERYONE liked Maya. Everyone likes Krieg, but his DLC was lame. People want more Fiona so instead, let's just bring in Rhys and Vaugn and "what do you mean you wanna see more Tales characters?" No no no, the rest of the story will be Ava-centric because everyone loves her, right?
