JayReg is, or at least *was*, a leftist before he made ironic anti-centrism his brand. In the Political Compass Rap that made him famous, he introduces Totalitarian Left, and both the Rights as despicable villains bragging about how awful they are. Then he introduces Anarchist Left who spends most of his lines telling them to go fuck themselves rather than, y'know, bragging about how awful lefty anarchism is (except for one tiny gag about how he gives away drugs for free).

Also, he later edited this out, but there was originally a joke after the end screen that said (pretty much word for word):



I feel like I'm being fucking gaslit here because I can't find that version on any reaction channels, and most people don't even know you can cut videos after upload. But this archive from 2019 shows it was originally 5 seconds longer. And if you play the current video at its last frame, you briefly see the caption for TR's line about committing genocide.

Plus, he uses the okay-sign emoji to represent Totalitarian Right. I rest my case.

That article implies that people who are considered better-looking by others are more likely to trend towards conservative views because they do not feel the world is particularly harsh or unfair. They also feel more efficacious. While this is amusing, it also makes sense to me. Leftist politics tend to collect unfortunate people: disabled, mentally challenged, oppressed minorities, all manner of queers who think the society does not accept them — and it would make sense that ugly people would trend towards leftist political views as well. All united in the feeling that the world is unjust and they have to fix it but are powerless on their own.

But, I have a simpler explanation of they the Normal Team lost to the Gay Team in the looks department. I think that to ‘look gay’ a person has to have a kind of effeminate appearance, and ‘effeminate appearance’ implies more delicate features than the usual. It is rare for somebody dumpy and homely to be described as ‘looking gay’ unless they have a face full of makeup or something as ostentatious.

As far as I'm aware, it's the former.

He has since made plenty of jokes at the expense of anarchist/libertarian leftists. The Antifa guy is frequently the butt of jokes in his Centricide videos. And in his non-series videos, he makes fun of breadtubers being hypocritical when they get rich [1], creators in general who badger their (left-leaning) audiences to vote [2] (or at least I interpreted that as a joke against lefties - convince me it isn't) and then of course, Antifa being the first to go after the communist revolution [3]. It's worth noting those three videos came out within 10 days of each other in December 2019, although that is probably just a coincidence. And in another video, an entire joke is that he praises Mein Kampf , which I doubt any internet leftist could bring themselves to do (when not explicitly playing a character), no matter how committed they were to the bit [4].

A friend of mine (who more-or-less occupies JayReg's former position, so take his opinion with a pinch of salt) thinks Greg became disillusioned and no longer truly believes in anything. December 2019 would be my best guess for when it happened, although it would have been starting to happen for a long time before that. And since so many of his jokes are self-deprecating, it's easy to see how he would have leaned into that more and more, the more centrist he became.

That anarcho-leftist slant in the Political Compass Rap was probably, in my opinion, a mask-slip in what was supposed to a non-preachy video. If it was intentionally preachy, you'd know about it in more ways than that. So either he got a lot more skilled at avoiding the lethal mask-slip (unlikely), or his views realy did change. It sounds almost too good to be true, but then again, Political Compass memes have been known to de-radicalise people.

Based on the brief look at that community, it appears to be one of the few rare ones on reddit that actually has people with diverse views participating. Good faith interaction with people with opposing views encourages you to consider different viewpoints. If ones used to echochambers wander into community like that, their entire ideological outlook can shift.

I heavily dislike ContraPoints but comparing this to Contra is like comparing Picasso's scribble-esque drawings to his actual art.
