Culture The misogynist incel movement is spreading. Should it be classified as a terror threat? - Incels rise up?

As attacks linked to the misogynist “incel” movement mounted in recent years, authorities around the world have begun to treat the ideology as a more serious terrorism threat.
Since 2014, men who call themselves “involuntary celibates” and blame women for their own lack of sexual and social status have carried out mass killings in California, Florida, and Toronto.
On Wednesday, a judge in Canada delivered a guilty verdict for the perpetrator of the 2018 Toronto van attack, which left 10 people dead and 16 injured – the deadliest incident linked to the incel movement.

In her verdict, the judge found that the attacker’s resentment towards women was one among several motivating factors, but experts warn that such incidents are becoming more frequent, and that the ideology behind them is spreading internationally.

2020 saw a string of incel-related incidents, including a machete attack at a Toronto massage parlor, a shooting at an Arizona mall which injured three people, a man who blew up his own hand with explosives in Virginia, and a New York man charged by federal prosecutors for targeting a couple with violent threats.
While only one of those attacks was fatal, “the fact those incidents weren’t worse is more luck than good counterterrorism,” said Jacob Ware, a terrorism researcher who studies the incel movement. “2020 was a bad year for incel violence.”

There are also signs the ideology is spreading beyond North America: in the UK, at least two recent terror trials included discussion of incel ideas as a motivation.
And as incel-related attacks have multiplied, the ideology has begun to get more attention from both law enforcement and counterterrorism researchers, sparking debate over whether it is useful to classify this kind of ideological violence against women as terrorism.

Last spring, Canada announced terrorism charges against a 17-year-old Toronto resident for the murder of 24-year-old Ashley Noelle Arzaga at a massage parlor, an attack law enforcement said was motivated by incel extremism. It was the first time Canada had charged anyone with incel-related terrorism.
Incel-related violence “seems to be increasing,” said Alex DiBranco, the executive director of the Institute for Research on Male Supremacism, and one of the authors of a recent report on misogynist violence. And, despite growing attention, “It’s still not being taken as seriously as it needs to be.”

Measuring the toll

By some counts, incel-related attacks in the United States and Canada have claimed as many as 40 to 50 lives, DiBranco and Ware said. But that statistic includes the toll of several large school shootings – including a 2015 shooting at a college in Roseburg, Oregon and a 2018 high school shooting in Parkland, Florida – in which the perpetrators made some mention of incel ideology alongside other grievances.
The number of casualties in the attacks most clearly motivated by incel ideology is smaller, and starts with the 2014 Isla Vista attack at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in which a 22-year-old killed six people and injured 14 others.
The Isla Vista perpetrator has been cited as a direct inspiration by other attackers, including the 28-year-old Canadian man convicted on Wednesday who posted about an “incel rebellion” on Facebook shortly before plowing his rental van into pedestrians on a Toronto street.

There are other attacks that predate the growth of the online incel movement, but that fit a similar pattern of anger towards women, including a 2009 attack on a fitness center in Pennsylvania, and the mass shooting of 14 female engineering students in Montreal in 1989 by a man who wrote of his rage against feminism.

So far, incel-related violence has not become a terror threat in the United States on the same scale as other violent ideologies, according to an analysis of domestic terror attacks by the New America Foundation.
Since 9/11, far rightwing attacks killed 114 people, and jihadist attacks had killed 107 people, while only nine people had been killed in American misogynist and incel attacks, the New America Foundation analysis found.
This count includes a July 2020 attack, in which an anti-feminist lawyer opened fire at the home of a female federal judge in New Jersey, leaving her son dead, an attack experts said was linked to misogyny, but not the incel movement specifically.
But incel terrorism in the United States has been much deadlier than far-left terrorism, which receives intense political and media attention in the US, the New America analysis found. Its data lists only a single person killed in a far-left attack in the US since 9/11.

What response is right?

Some experts are skeptical of the value of approaching the incel movement through a counterterrorism lens, rather than as a public health problem, said Ware adding that some see a risk in making the movement “look like a bigger deal than it is”.
“Incels display very high levels of mental health issues. They display high levels of a history of bullying. This is a movement that is desperately sad,” he said.
At the same time, he said, “Incel violence is ideological violence against civilians, to prove an ideological point or create psychological fear. That makes it terrorism.”

The Isla Vista shooter made clear in his manifesto that he wanted to make women afraid, said DiBranco.
“Though misogynist incels are often perceived as a movement without political aims, violent perpetrators have the same type of far-reaching aims that white nationalists have: to completely change the culture and politics of society to favor their own group,” she and her co-authors wrote in a February report.
“This is an ideology. It’s not a psychological disorder,” she said. “There’s a lot of undue sympathy.”

That's kind of unfair. A lot of incels do seem unsympathetic but the point is not that being incel is a disorder but how strongly correlated with mental illness.
>men's mental health is constantly ignored and mocked
>male suicide rates are spiking
>homeless men are left to rot on the street and men make up most of the homeless population
>adult male virginity rates have gone up to 30.5 percent in recent years as well as the rates of single men going up
Yeah, let's label men who are already pissed off at society for treating them like shit terrorists, whAt COulD gO WroNG?
Who is ignoring and mocking male mental health? People are more aware of mental illness now more than ever.
a lot of these women are willing to give head to get what they want
why don't they offer the same to guys to make them not terrorists?
That won't solve the root causes.

Yes, tons of people are aware of it. Doesn't stop male suicide rates from climbing. Also most guys keep their emotions locked away for a reason, and it's because they know no one gives a shit.

See anything wrong?

Just because we're supposedly more aware of mental illness (I don't think the APA suggesting that the administration of puberty blockers and SRS as reasonable treatments for gender dysphoria bodes well in terms of general awareness of mental illness), doesn't mean that we're automatically or even sufficiently aware of male mental illness.

The way that society overall treats the sensitivity and vulnerability of men is largely unchanged, but now, they're told lies about how others actually care (and if there is genuine concern, there's often an inability to actually assist in shouldering or otherwise ameliorating the burdens). That, and we've largely lost men-only spaces where those issues could be hashed out in the context of the male subculture.

This. There is so much truth in the phrase "bros before hoes". Men need brotherhood and male bonding.

And while a platonic friendship with a woman or two isn't bad unto itself, women cannot substitute male friendship. Women cannot teach men how to be men.

More people were killed by Somalis chucking hand grenades in Sweden than were killed by incels acting out their incel fantasies last year.
There's been 2 men, to my knowledge at least, who went on killing sprees explicitly due to their failure at getting sex.
And both were mentally ill trainwrecks who would have ended up killing people over something else other then sex.

There's a few I can think of off the top of my head. That Marc Lepine that shot up a Canadian college in 89. The article mentions him. George Sodini, Elliot Rodger, arguably Adam Lanza, although he probably had a lot more going on than just thirst and was a Columbine fanboy, the farms' own Couch Cuck and Lindsay Kannitha Souvannarath, a really baffling female example who would have had the easiest of times getting laid. Tomohiro Kato and Yake Torres. Quite a few of them from before the Incel "movement" became a thing.

I don't even get how people are saying Incel is a movement. It's just sadsacks coping 24/7 and most of them are harmless. 99% of these dudes only need, as some people in this thread have said, a male bro to call them an idiot for worrying about something as silly as being a virgin. Sex is nice but it's pointless in the grand scheme of things. Meth dealing pimps get crackhead pussy 24/7 and it doesn't make them succesful in real life at all. For the remaining 1% of actual nutcases, society would have to be much better about detecting that sort of thing.

I think Incels are generally a symptom and not a disease. We have a vapid society that puts a LOT of prestige on sex. We're moving away from monogamy. We're normalizing sex work and sugar dating as empowering things for women. People aren't interested in sex to put your feelings and deep connection to your SO into physical actions, it's more about clout and instant gratification. We have no sympathy for guys who develop feelings or fail to work properly in the system: A guy paying a lot of attention and usually money to a twitch thot, just to get yeeted out of her life because she's banging someone hotter and more succesful only ellicits "LOL get BTFO paypig" from the crowd. I'm not saying it shouldn't, but it is a society that many times pushes guys into that hole then promptly mocks them for falling into it.

Hell, I remember being called a MGTOW a couple years back on this very forum because I said giving legal advantage to women over men is just as bad as doing the opposite. We could, as a society, just tell these young frustrated males to just fuck off from women and focus on achieving other things... And women would then most likely REE.

EDIT: More things!

Outside of Rodger and Sodini, the rest murdered for various reasons other then their lack of sexual success with women.
And yeah, the seething hatred towards incels is hilarious. Take a quick look at their main forum, and you'll see them either fighting over which race is more incel or admitting to being suicidal and hating themselves for not working up the courage to kill themselves. Most are just miserable outcasted men who are more of a danger to themselves then others, even if the ones who are open about being incel tend to be pretty crazy.

When I think of incels and their miseries, I'm reminded of a saying - "the best revenge is to live well in spite of what others wish". If society or (insert nebulous entity here) is doing their damnedest to make you miserable, why would you then crawl right into the hole they allegedly dug for you and are chasing you into, and proceed to be miserable?

That said, imagine calling incels a "serious terror threat". That kind of shit stems from either complete absence of perspective or specific marching orders on which boogeyman to hype up this week.

Yeah, for the rest of them it was only a part of a bigger mental basket of issues. Well, arguably for Kato it was either the biggest or the second biggest thing. But I really think Lindsay planning a trip to Canada to get her cherry popped and also shoot up a mall smacks of Incel, for example. Torres Yake (Or Yagi, I got the surname order wrong and police reports are a little foggy) was married and yet not slaying as much pussy as he wanted to ended up in him strangling and raping a child. His workmates stated that he would be despondent with the men at the workplace but either only talked to or tried to sweet talk all the women around. Again, comes from poor translations from 2005, so I may be a little off here. Proving somewhat that you can be an incel in spite of having reproduced... It gets a little silly.

I feel a lot of the incel "movement" and the fear and hatred media tries to stir up on slow news days against them could be dispelled immediately by a simple "It's a dry spell, you doofus, shave the fucking pube beard, work out a bit, and make RL friends. Get off that dumbass forum." Wallowing in a mire of self pity, self hatred, and surrounding yourself with other guys who hate themselves and want to die but have no will to move forward isn't the healthiest thing to do. And people trying to label the bunch of them terrorists not only feels like kicking people who are very much down already, but probably justifying the nuttier ones in taking more extreme actions.
