Eh, I honestly don't know what to think of it.

The music was great (sans the vocals), but the video production quality was really sub-par for their usual standards...and not even in an ironic kind of way. like, it was actually bad, as in, Windows Movie Maker bad at parts. It had the editing of a 2005-era AVGN video, but the HD camera work of a modern AVGN video. It just doesn't really work. Also it just seemed like it was missing something the whole time, as if I was watching a rough cut. It looked very rushed and half-assed.

I didn't dislike it, but I also didn't give it a thumbs up.

It looked like a mid life crisis put on display for the world to see.

The song to be fair isn't so bad, but the visuals are just horrible. And I felt like James isn't doing much on the guitar to begin with given how much the focus is on him playing the guitar.

And seriously? The video even features James being pissed off at the Back to the Future NES game to the point he had to travel back to the past and blew up LJN? How can I NOT think of the infamous Irate Gamer's very 1st episode?

Imagine if, say, Neil Schon from Journey decided to quit playing music and take up a career making Youtube reviews for shitty video games. He's not the worst at it, he's no AVGN as much as he's blatantly inspired by AVGN but all his stuff is like a better Irate Gamer episode maybe. You find it amusing the guitarist from Journey is reviewing shitty games but you do also wonder why he's not touring and playing music and is instead wasting his time making ridiculous videos. Sure, he works in plenty of references to what he's known for since he mostly reviews shit like the Journey video game on Atari or the KISS video games, but eventually the novelty of "famous rock musician reviewing shitty video games" wears off and you start to wonder why you're watching this since in the end, it's pretty average stuff.

That's what James is doing with Rex Viper. It's strangely amusing to see James rocking out, but the novelty of a bunch of vidya-themed covers of 80s rock songs wears off fast and at the end of the day it's pretty average and the only thing separating it from another bunch of 40-somethings in their garage is the fact that AVGN is playing guitar.

Or to use a shorter metaphor, it's Michael Jordan playing baseball.

Honestly as much I think alot of the AVGN stuff had been average so far with occasional good one here and there I think his current direction is somewhat expected. If I was in his shoes mostly doing the same bit for 17 years just to put food on the table I would try to branch out to something else. As long he doesn't pull a Doug on us and just fully abandon everything and put all his eggs in one basket and it stays just a side thing like YKWBS or James and Mike Mondays then I see no harm in it overall.

Jamming out on a song from his childhood and still making that FUCKING FACE:

Guess what they say about making the same face all the time and it staying that way is ture. *yawn*

love how the tables have turned, how should we deal with this (AVGN) fucking bum?

Chris Bores at this point is more successful than James is, plus he seems genuinely happy about his career, Meanwhile James is miserable and works with people that nobody finds funny in the slightest.

I think the fact alone that Chris Bores got access to an event with other popular children's entertainers is enough to show he has a good future ahead of him.

Since no one is still making that clip with James' cumming face.....

No clean up or editing it to make it better, I refuse, no time.

The way I see it, Chris certainly has passion for his videos, whether it be for his kids shows or Irate Gamer, but has virtually no talent. James has talent, and his knack for filmmaking goes back for well before most of us were born, but the thing is, at this point, he has virtually no passion. He's able to give us a good video every once in a while, but he seems to desperately want to not just be seen at the character many associate him with for the longest time.

Can't say I blame him. James had a good run, but how many of us can really say we want to be forever known as the guy who took a rage dump on Bugs Bunny? Personally I'd be fine with him just doing solo reviews on random movies

I don't know why James can't just straight up say "Hey I don't really like doing the AVGN that often and I hope you guys can understand that I want to try new things"

I think the problem is though, James is good, or at least was good at playing the AVGN, but was mediocre to bad for everything else he did. Board James was good but sorta declined at the end with it’s plotholes, James and Mike Mondays also had the same issues and Rental Reviews failed badly due to the fact nobody liked the Screenwave slobs because they tried way too hard to be funny. The AVGN was the golden goose, but even it turned shit-brown after a long while. I personally think he should’ve ended the series after the Rob the Robot Episode as that would make for a good finale. But of course since it was giving him money, he continued on anyways which led to it’s decline.

The reason why Red Letter Media or Jontron for example are better at what they do is because they spend time and effort with the writing, reviewing and critiques they use in their videos. James on the other hand just sticks to one plot dynamic and simplifies it when it becomes too challenging for him. He doesn’t want to put effort into his videos anymore, hell it’s partly why the Nerd rarely ever leaves the couch in the newer episodes. Because that would just make James actually work hard for once.

I'm guessing James isn't ending AVGN because he's worried it will end up like Demo Reel did for Doug. There's also the issue that James is a father caring for 2 kids, so to kill the golden goose that is AVGN will not just effect him but his family as well. He just got Screenwave as it was the best case scenario as he doesn't have to put as much time and effort into AVGN and can go be in a band and whatever he feels like while being financially secure.
