Dumb Shit on Wikipedia

In other news, Elliott Page's Wikipedia page has been made extend confirmed protected indefinately, all because he/she/whatever has a connection to GamerGate.

I was surprised that they still had her former name at the top of the article still, as normally when someone comes out as trans there's a mass effort to ignore the fact that the person ever presented as male/female on their wiki articles, including the omission of their former name. But apparently there's this massive discussion at the top of the talk page that's about that precise thing.

Needless to say, that general policy makes it utterly worthless as an "encyclopedia," especially about people with any legitimate historical importance. If the articles are literally full of lies just because someone troons out, who can trust it about anything else?

I have a small game I play when I'm bored and procrastinating of going onto random wikipedia articles for really common, mundane things like bread, butter, etc and reading the overly technical description they use to open the article with.
Butter is a dairy product made from the fat and protein components of milk or cream. It is a semi-solid emulsion at room temperature, consisting of approximately 80% butterfat. It is used at room temperature as a spread, melted as a condiment, and used as an ingredient in baking, sauce making, pan frying, and other cooking procedures.

Dough is a thick, malleable, sometimes elastic paste made out of any grains, leguminous or chestnut crops. Dough is typically made by mixing flour with a small amount of water and/or other liquid, and sometimes includes yeast or other leavening agents as well as other ingredients such as various fats or flavorings.

Ice cream (derived from earlier iced cream or cream ice)[1] is a sweetened frozen food typically eaten as a snack or dessert. It may be made from dairy milk or cream and is flavoured with a sweetener, either sugar or an alternative, and any spice, such as cocoa or vanilla. It can also be made by whisking a flavored cream base and liquid nitrogen together. Colorings are usually added, in addition to stabilizers. The mixture is stirred to incorporate air spaces and cooled below the freezing point of water to prevent detectable ice crystals from forming. The result is a smooth, semi-solid foam that is solid at very low temperatures (below 2 °C or 35 °F). It becomes more malleable as its temperature increases.

A hammer is a tool consisting of a weighted "head" fixed to a long handle that is swung to deliver an impact to a small area of an object. This can be, for example, to drive nails into wood, to shape metal (as with a forge), or to crush rock.[1][2] Hammers are used for a wide range of driving, shaping, and breaking applications.

If I ever had to write an autistic alien character, wikipedia would finally be a useful reference material for something.

This page (and probably other similar pages about the same topic) used to be a small table at the end of the page detailing the state of LGBT rights in Tennessee. It's since been expanded to detail everything else, like if transgender people can be in sports, anti-discrimination laws, LGBT education, etc.

Not that I mind knowing how the state is regarding LGBT rights, but that is way too much for that table, not to mention there are things on the table that are better of being detailed on the page regarding LGBT Rights in the US.

And following right after that: "According to white supremacist Richard Spencer, the term is a shorthand used to express "a certain kind of contempt for conservatives" - David Duke 2.0 always there to give leftists a bogus definition to use against his supposed political 'allies'. Why is that implicit faggot considered a reliable source for anything?

I like how 4chan-tier insults now have entire Wikipedia articles, with essays, explaining why the people who used these insults are bad, and also why the people being insulted are good. :story:

"They made fun of me and said I'd let another man fuck my wife, how do I get back at them?"

Myspace served as an inexpensive distribution hub for black musical artists.[90] This easy distribution of music created another avenue with which black music could be spread. The Internet itself proved to be a powerful force in creating fanbases for many artists. Artists used Myspace to distribute their music and to connect to their audience. Musical blogs on Myspace helped to inform an artist's fanbase of future or canceled shows.[91] Black artists rose in popularity because of this system of promotion and distribution. Soulja Boywas one of the first and most prolific users of musical Myspace. As a young artist, he received millions of views online from Myspace and YouTube. Not only were his views and plays skyrocketing, but so was his presence offline: in the classrooms, in the streets, everywhere around the US there was a dance or phrase that Soulja originated.[92] Other artists across different Black musical genres followed in Soulja's footsteps. More and more hip-hop, R&B, and Grime artists used Myspace to gain popularity.

Yeah, that’s what sharing platforms do. If I were to delete that entire section would anyone even notice?

I believe the consensus is, if the person in question was famously known by whatever name they had before they became a tranny then it must be specified. See Caitlyn Jenner:

But someone like "Gabi Tuft", born Gabriel Allan Tuft, who was more commonly known by the ring name "Tyler Reks", only gets called "Gabi Tuft" because their rational is that his previous name is "not relevant".

It's kind of funny that they try to help these troons deny who they once were. There was a big problem with Nikkie de Jager, and there's a hidden note if you try to edit his Wikipedia page stating that you must refer to them as "she/her".

The most basic elements of an encyclopedia are simple things like the circumstances of someone's birth. Without that it isn't even an encyclopedia, it's just a puff piece reponsitory for troons to make shit up.

I don't get it either. Another controversial subject is nationality, particularly that of Kurds. Many Kurdish people's Wiki pages are subject to editing wars because even though Kurdistan isn't an official country and they usually hold citizenship to West Asian countries like Turkey, Iraq or Iran or elsewhere like the United States, many editors (either IP or registered accounts) love to put that they're "Kurdish" in their lede or nationality instead of the country that they're from/have citizenship to. The general rule is that a notable person's lede should establish their nationality/country of citizenship/etc, and that ethnicity should be left out unless it's "important".

It's not uncommon to see their nationality listed as being "Kurdish", but no one bends over backwards for the Quebecois and other territories/regions/etc that aren't recognized as official countries. So is it all just based on feelings then? I thought Wikipedia was suppose to provide facts and the truth from a "neutral point of view".

Kurdish is a weaponized political nationality. Major NGOs don't want to encourage people to believe Quebec is a real country that should have self-determination because that's against their political goals, but they do for Kurdistan.

From what I gather, the reason why the Wiki infobox template makes a distinction between "nationality" and "citizenship" is because of the politics behind national identity. Ex - If someone from Scotland or Wales identifies themselves "Scottish" or "Welsh" instead of being just "British".

Since you mentioned that, I'm guessing those in power wouldn't benefit/don't want a fractured Canada. But recognizing an independent Kurdistan would surely destabilize the Arab world even further.

Somewhat similarly, Basque Country is split between France and Spain, so if they got their own country, it would involve taking from two countries. Needless to say, Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria have no interest whatsoever in the existence of a Kurdistan.

So much for the right of a people to self-determination, or even to identify themselves as an ethnicity of their choice. Thanks white saviors.
