I think I see what you're getting at. There's a visceral reaction to this stuff online; whenever someone posts a think piece about 'identity'. (As actors are prone to do. Jim Carrey is an example.)

Which isn't entirely wrong: If you're breaking your back working two jobs, you don't have time to ponder the meaning of it all. I also wonder if Americans in general suffer from it; careening from one "identity" to another. It definitely seems prevalent now. I think it stops (or damn near) testosterone/estrogen production. Which puts a hold on puberty, and is useful if you have a cancer that causes excess hormone production.
Edit - or the treatment causes it, I guess.
