Oh yeah the federal government is who’s to blame in terms of how damn hard it is to import cool stuff, but one of my pet peeves is a libertarian type swooping into a situation where one guy is 100% at fault and going “actually government bad” and thinking they have taken the moral/intellectual high ground. After his closing monologue thing he says

Probably not.... at least nobody will admit to paying that much, and/or will quickly deflect to the "rarity" of said rifles.

I've already overheard this shit bleed over IRL; a couple shop regulars talking about how $8000 for *any* PSL is a deal now, along with predictions they'll be worth at least double in ten years; while drawing parallels with those fabled $600 PSLs from pre-Obama years now being worth that much.

It didn't sound like they were upset about being fleeced, more so because they're surprised MAC is doing it, and would do such a heinous thing along with making bank.

Even better would be the supercritical mass of radioactive salt that'd come from an internet slapfight between the two.

here is the dirty little secret of the AK world. they were only ever cheap because we were getting cold war stockpile guns rebuilt into semi autos. easy to make a 300 dollar rifle when you already have 95% of it ready. but now all these AKs are completely new construction and we are now seeing their real price.

You left out the part about post Soviet bloc AK factory workers that work for pennies on the dollar. Century Arms was paying something like $26 dollers per AK and selling them here for $300. You'd also get a sling, oiler, cleaning kit, cleaning rod, and a few magazines back then as well. Nowadays you're lucky if an AK comes with a single shitty PMag.

In some cases that can be for 922(r) compliance. I remember back in the day, 10 years ago or more, those horrible Tapco mags shipped with AKs with big disclaimers that they were ONLY 922(r) compliant with a US-made magazine.
US-made AKs often ship with US-made mags too for I guess patriotism but also European surplus mags are starting to creep up a bit in price. I remember when you could get Romanian surplus 30-rounders for 10 bucks, those days are gone now.

Yeah, anything SVD related attracts a pretty high amount of autism for sure. I noticed the MAC shitstorm related memes pop up in a few fb gun groups, but not a ton in the way of context, but his bullshit definitely is getting widely noticed.

Personally I wasn't ever really that much of a fan of the guy, the making a big deal out of the whole "Kentucky Colonel" shtick made him seem like a tool. Never realized exactly how much of one until seeing all the shit documented over this.

The funny thing about SVDs is how idiots mistake garbage like the PSL for it, which is totally differently mechanically and far, far, far shittier. It's essentially an elongated AK. Those things were never worth more than $600, honestly and even that felt too much. The fact they go for over $1000 is mind boggling.

Legislation drives the market more than anything, yeah, but everyone looks back at the days of "$60 SKS rifles" and thinks the next recent rifle seen as hot garbage is actually misunderstood. That's more what I was getting at.

I think that really only applied to the SKS and Mosin. As far as I've known, the PSL was always known as actual shit. Romanian AKs have pretty much always been the bottom of the barrel of Soviet era AK variants, which is part of why WASRs have the reputation they do. The other part is because the people working at Century Arms are pretty much half trained apes.

you dont even get to call yourself colonel if you are in the kentucky colonelcy. you get refered to as honorable in formal events and such.

Funny thing about the Romanian rifles, I recall reading on the old weaponsman blog (now offline, but mirrored at looserounds, but the internal links haven't been updated so its a pain to navigate) that us special forces managed to get their hands on a few crates of Romanian aks in the 80s and something like 1 in 10 didn't even work. These were new rifles, never fired.
