Coronavirus researchers are looking at fighting fire with fire.

A new study published Tuesday in the Journal of Infectious Diseases suggests that the human rhinovirus, otherwise known as the “common cold,” helps block SARS-CoV-2 from replicating in the respiratory tract.

Scientists at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) now believe that this natural immune response to the cold may also provide significant protections from COVID-19. Thus, those with both pathogens present in their body may be uniquely fortified against a deadlier coronavirus.

Yet another "deboonked" conspiracy theory turns out to be true. No doubt we'll see Fauci shortly doing a media round telling us how he always knew that cross reactivity was a thing, but he just couldn't tell us because we'd be too dumb to understand.

Expect more studies showing non Covid corona viruses having the same effect.

The good news is that we've spent the past year wearing masks, and socially distancing and keeping kids at home so they haven't been catching colds. Even better we're now injecting millions of people with non vaccines that work just well enough to allow more deadly forms of Covid to spread.

Maybe I spoke too soon? My grandmother had a stroke today, less than three weeks after her second shot. Strokes run in her immediate family so I'm not about to get too tinfoily, and now I'm less worried about her having a stroke than getting the WuFlu while she's in the hospital, although maybe they've learned a fucking thing or two after a year about how respiratory diseases spread.

Sorry for the slightly OT blog post, but it is fucking weird to me that she has a stroke not long after getting the Moderna vax.

My mother is in the hospital. She had a relapse of her COPD after getting her first shot (Moderna), started to recover and then got her second shot and ended up in the hospital. She's been there over a week. Now, I won't say that I'm certain it had anything to do with the shots. She is in her 70's and she's had COPD for quite a while, so it may be just one big coincidence. But, it is odd that she went almost a full year on lockdown without a relapse and then suddenly she has 2.

I'm not getting the shot because I've had an allergic reaction to a rushed vaccine before (the H1N1 shot) and I'm not going through that again. I'm not in any high risk category, so I'd rather take my chances with covid at this point. My spouse has had both shots (Pfizer) and only had a headache after the first shot. So, I don't think it is a dangerous thing to most people. I just think there is a good chance I will be that 1 in a million that doesn't fare too well. I've got some shitty genes, apparently, and I've got a ton of allergies so I'm most worried about it potentially causing an allergic reaction or an immune system problem down the line. I'll get it if I'm forced to, but as long as it is optional, it's a nope from me no matter how much my boomer dad tries to guilt me into getting it.

Covid is nasty stuff. I've lost 2 family members to it, so I'm hoping the vaccines actually do their job. But, I just don't trust when a 10 year process gets shaved down to 12 months. Seems suspect to me.

It seems the case is that Rhinoviruses are good at competeing with coronaviruses, so that if you have an active Rhinovirus cold then you're more protected against COVID (or a Coronavirus cold) because of the competition + active immune response.

With prior exposure to any one of the four "weaker"/"common cold" Coronaviruses (I mean technically SARS or MERS too, but at that point you'd be hoping COVID protects you from those two) you're body would hypothetically have a leg up in re-identifying the infection and producing effective antibodies quicker.
Furthermore, IF we are too believe that the other two "common cold" Coronaviruses HKU-1 & OC43 are close enough to give a false positive on a COVID antibody test, meaning the antibodies used to fight them off are so damn similar they can fool a test, then it would stand to reckon that those antibodies would be effective against COVID (and therefore the B-cells are capable of recreating them).

I worked out today at the gym with my trainer. No masks in sight. Nice sunny day, can't wait for Spring to get here. I'm doing a lot of camping this year now that I'm in a free and open state.

Swung by the grocery store on my way home, about half the people wore masks there. No fuss over those choosing not to, no mean stares comments or treating people like lepers for daring to breathe without a piece of cloth that does fuck all against viruses. The store requires them, but doesn't enforce. If they tried to cut people off from groceries they'd be rightfully shot.

I like being surrounded by sane like-minded people. How you guys are coping in left-tarded states is beyond me. I'd have gone insane by now.

You can tell if a store is owned by leftist wackjobs by how insane their mask signage is. Surprise, the art galleries downtown are all literal mask nazis. Oh well, I hope they all go out of business. They are definitely not getting my money, ever even when this passes by. Luckily 99% of businesses here respect their customers and are smart enough to have zero mask rules, or if they do it is "recommended" and never spoken of again. That I'm fine with, treat me with respect and I couldn't care less if you wear 2 commie masks, shit go for 3!

The local credit union allowed me to sign up for a new account without a mask, no problem. I'm sure if I was dumb enough to try a BofA I'd have been refused. Good, I always preferred smaller businesses to giant mega corporations, but now I have an even bigger incentive.

I'm a New Zealander, and I want to know what this past year has been like for people in other parts of the world.

Are any of you living in parts of the world where you don't have to care about this anymore? Are there any parts of the USA that didn't fall for this whole lockdown scam?

My life barely changed at all. In the Southeast, most places had very temporary closures back at the start of 2020, then opened back up, then waffled between being wide open and imposing silly measures like mask mandates and 11PM alcohol curfews (for bars, clubs, and dining establishments). The biggest single impact for me was that I couldn't go to the gym for about 2 months, and the next "biggest" was being confronted about wearing a mask by store employees (at which point I laughed at them and went to a different store).

Right now business hours are normal, the alcohol curfew is gone, but venues still have partial capacity restrictions. Mask enforcement and compliance of any kind has fallen off rapidly in the past month. Not too far away, GA and FL are completely wide open.
