People forget how much of a triple bankshot Trump’s victory really was in 2016:
- Hillary Clinton is likely the most loathed American politician in decades
- People were tired of the constant rioting and Trump made repeated promises to crack down
- Trump’s talk of bringing jobs back to the rust belt attracted people who were ignored since the 1980s
- Trump’s economic policy of things like closing the carried interest loopholes and infrastructure spending attracted those who see that our current infrastructure is in awful shape
- He wanted to take on opiate addiction, something Obama refused to talk about
- Last but not least, building the wall and deporting them all
In spite of all that, he still lost the popular vote. He won by razor thin margins in the rust belt and upper midwest. Trump’s failure to deliver on any of his promises meant his goose was cooked from the beginning. Biden doesn’t know what day of the week it is but being considered senile is considered much more benign than the absolute hatred of Hillary she inspires in people.
