Anyway, this guy doesn't seem like such a good prosecution witness, since he was trying to stop Floyd from freaking out and stop resisting. But I guess the prosecution's gonna hammer on character witness against Chauvin here. He seems like he's gonna be straightforward no matter who asks what, though.

There isn't exactly a "misdemeanor arrest procedure" and a "felony arrest procedure" in the course of the arrest/detainment itself.

Actually, there usually is. Police are trained to arrest different kinds of suspects differently. A stop for a violent felony generally involves the immediate use of force, as well as the legal justification for shooting a fleeing suspect. Generally, a misdemeanor arrest doesn't allow this.

That said any kind of arrest can end up involving deadly force as the situation gets out of hand.

On the pro-force side, Floyd was large, intimidating, obviously high on drugs, and uncooperative. That justified at least some level of force, which should have been limited to that necessary to obtain his compliance, not potentially deadly force. The hold used is actually in the police manual, so Chauvin was trained to use it, but the judgment call actually to use it against a suspect who was only passively uncooperative was at the very least a bad call.

Even if it wasn't, though, the choice to continue using that hold long after all resistance had ceased, when the manual also says you're supposed to put someone on their side (not on their back because then they are in a better position to try to break the hold) to recover after they're subdued, was clearly worse. I honestly don't know why they even took him out of the car. If they had kept him in there, he could have chimped out all he liked and he wouldn't have been able to harm anyone, if that was what they were worried about.

I really think the defense has to call Derek Chauvin himself, because really, the question here is what the fuck were you thinking? They need to humanize the guy, if it's remotely possible, and whether or not this was any kind of murder is completely in his state of mind doing this. Was he confused? Afraid of the mob? Did he know about Floyd's history of rather extreme violence and was that why he thought he needed this kind of restraint? Did he know about Floyd's previous "I CAN'T SNEED" shit and that this was a ruse Floyd had played in the past?

The answers to these questions are the difference between murder (of whatever degree), manslaughter, some kind of assault, or outright acquittal. I'd say if he actually knew Floyd had a serious criminal history involving a home invasion robbery with extreme and sadistic violence, he'd have had every reason to be preemptive in restraint, especially when Floyd was pulling a ruse he had a history of in Minneapolis itself.
