YIIK suffers from interesting ideas and utterly horrible execution.

I’ll throw in another long review that’s actually pretty entertaining to watch.

From watching this the first time, I sort of like the choppy animations (which could have almost made for a cool pixel-art game with the right filter) and there's clearly some decent care put into the character models (the rest seems like a mish-mash of bad art direction), but it's clear that from the first few moments of the game, the writing tries too hard and is very self-centered on the main character (who feels like a self-insert).

I think it suffers from one of the common issues with this sort of self-aware 'meta' writing- that the characters are also painfully self-aware, instead of just the authors.

I liked how Chris reflexively realized to stay away from that in-game Games Journalist shilling his whatever.

It’s probably back in the public eye because they recently released a massive patch that completely overhauled the gameplay and redid a rather infamous scene regarding a character coming to terms with their younger sister’s death and a lore dump.....immediately interrupted by a boss fight with a golden alpaca that shouts “lemonade” when it attacks.

Anyway, look at this cool animation.

Oh, and for comparison’s sake, here’s the original scene I was talking about vs the redone version(the latter is the one Chris will be seeing if they get that far).

Yeah, it's unlinked so you have to have that exact address. Not entirely sure why, but eh. It's a quality stream - a friend tried to get me to check the game out with the premise alone, which sounded like a real banger. Turns out the game was written by complete fucking children, though, so DD&J saved me a solid $20 from the past.

YIIK is another one where there's just... I like the idea of a hatable protagonist, I like the weird art style, I like the kitschy post-ironic humor, I like the idea of sometimes having an attack minigame. But my fucking god it's just the sum total and the writing are so bad and no-one put thought into it. Drives me up a wall, so I'm so excited to see what happens to Chris.
It's similar to Duke Nukem Forever, where they accidentally unironically repeat the same things their game is mocking

The iwata tombstone and the alpaca were the only things i actually remembered about YIIK
I also remember that someone got really pissed off over the girl in the elevator because it's based on the Elisa Lam incident

YIIK is the same shit as Night In The Woods or Life Is Strange where it has a cool premise but the writing and characters are so utterly shite that it's only good for a laugh. If you want something with a similar enough premise but actually good writing check out Oxenfree.

The original was really, really awful in every form. A huge, lazy text dump with next to nothing changing on screen followed by a lolrandom enemy out of nowhere that did nothing at all in story.

Somehow the weird Angel!Alpaca thing is better but it's still very.. off. It doesn't feel quirky it feels like they put in a sort've Sephiroth expy with an alpaca head who then somehow actually became related to the story. There was a clear and serious improvement to the rest of the scene, they should've just had it be a different 'thing' in the role rather than an Alpaca. Then it would've actually seemed suitably dramatic.

I'm really liking these new episodes with DD and Julian. Funny because I was never that into them before, I guess this is just special since they haven't been regulars on the show in like 3 or so years.

Julian sounds more confident in his jokes for me, he used to either back off or get quiet when he feels like he's taking too long to get to the punchline

It's very interesting to compare the two times and how dingus and julian got better in my opinion

Julian does sound a lot more confident. Maybe taking time off has helped him be more comfortable doing stuff like this.
