Even in "the past" you'd get slapped with accusations of -ism, -ist, and -phobe if you tried to speak out about it on social media or even irl. If you were unfortunate enough to have your name attached in any way that would lead back to you, you could expect your employers (or business partners/clients if you're self employed) to get flooded with complaints about your "problematic" behavior.

It's not that people didn't try, it's that anyone who tried was dealt with swiftly and brutally enough that everyone else got the message.
