Let's pretend for one moment that he does die before the election, just for the funsies. What happens then? Will the nomination revert to option number 2, aka Bernie Sanders? Even then, it was a quick leap from "lol those Tumblrinas are so triggered" too "Time for our daily pledge to the Aztec god of human sacrifice to help our war for social justice, class".
I'd say the seeds for all this insanity were started decades before "SJW's" became a thing, and there was plenty of pushback then that didn't work out, especially since everyone with the actual power either supported it or let all of it happen.

I think it'd have been much, much slower. For whatever reason, possibly due to age, the fuckwads at the top getting the giant middle finger that was Trump's election spurned them into speeding up their agenda. For the stooges that they lead around by the nose, well, they're exactly the kind of person who went around thinking that the entire country thought the same way they did, and being mushroom-stamped with the revelation that they weren't anywhere near as popular as they thought they were somewhat understandably lit a fire under their asses.

So from both ends of the pyramid, Trump being elected was a call to arms of sorts.

tbf the media has either leaned or outright fallen left for decades at this point. It just used to be more egalitarian in that there were a few who would roundly mock fuckups on both sides of the aisle. Seems to have really started after Vietnam/Watergate. Entertainment industry has been infested with commies and other brands of traitors since before the Cold War developed its first frost.
As for your other point, it's hilarious to observe in real time because a lot of the people I know personally who are all in on Ridin with Biden were the same people who were calling for Dubya to be dragged through the streets of Baghdad and put on trial for war crimes - and they're two sides of the same fucking coin. Mention words like "establishment" and you get looked at like a qtard but realistically speaking, neoliberals and neoconservatives of the modern era such as Bush, Clinton, Obama and Biden have more in common with each other than they do with the factions within their same party.
Makes me wonder if that's why we saw all the efforts to reform Bush's image to the normies over the last few years - the cutesy photos with Michelle O, the CNN docs that slathered on praise about how he'll be remembered differently and warmly etc (their 2000s documentary series specifically mentioned how history will regard Bush more positively than people of his time), the OP-eds about how he wasn't really such a bad guy, etc. They know that criticisms against Bush are not different from the criticisms that can be levied against them once the fog of TDS finally subsides and they're left being forced to explain their motivations with something other than "orange man bad"

the conservatives would have gone crazy, perhaps derangement syndrome level crazy over a hillary victory, and then the left would have reacted similarly imo. The tea party emerging in opposition to obama comes to mind. Its a collision course with many factors, the biggest one being the university system imo. ID would allow them to identify and reject the votes of felons, which is racist since more than one in three black men are felons.

So it's basically the "it's racist to deport illegal immigrants!!" argument where they don't like the law and don't want to enforce it/ refuse to understand why it exists.

That and they want to dump tens of thousands of fake ballots into the system with no way to identify or remove them.

The closest thing to an argument I hear is that some local Republicans make it harder to get IDs by closing down or limiting the hours of DMV offices and such.
