In college I had a friend I thought was named Porsche and I was like lol typical hood rat name but she wasn't a hood rat so I gave her props for that and later I realized her name was Portia, after the Shakespeare character in the Merchant of Venice.During slavery and shit they didn't really get to name their own children. Once slavery ended they started naming their children, usually giving them traditional American names.
At some point they began trying to reclaim their heritage by giving them non traditional names. Unfortunately most had no idea of their culture as they were separated from their actual African ancestors by multiple generations so they would end up giving their children names that sounded right but weren't actual names.
At this point it's done simply to give their kid a unique name that ends up hampering them in life. This is unfortunate as there are many great African names (Kwame, Ekon, Imani etc).
Man did I feel dumb. And mean.
