If the cops are being yelled at every time they use the slightest force on these 'peaceful protesters' why would they? These city governments have made it clear that they are not to be involved if they want to keep their jobs. The federal government is also now cracking down on police forces for the limited amount of force they used over the summer - Portland despite letting the rioters go buck wild most of the time are in contempt of their consent agreement for resisting some times and being pestered by the feds.

A thought occurred to me. Are the riots and general civil unrest worse than the (late) 60's or is it just amplified by all the cameras and there's nothing really unique about whats happening in Portland.

Whats happening all over the country today is unique in that it's far more visible to the 95% of the population that aren't directly effected by it in any significant way, and that the powers that be more or less tolerate it continuing for the time being. But a lot of instances of civil unrest over the last century, early 20th all the way up to the early 90's, had much higher body counts.

The latter is a direct consequence of the former, politicians are concerned about the optics of cracking down on rioters in the age of the internet/phone cameras. So a lot of the people who would bail as soon as real bullets started being fired and real charges started being handed down stay on the streets prolonging the riots, along side the more dedicated people who would probably resort to more pointed actions like murder and bombings if a real crackdown happened.

I posted some articles somewhere in the thread. Basically there was a ShotSpotter call of 8 shots and police responded to the location. They saw Toledo and Roman (the older guy) run off and the cops gave chase.

As much as I hate the word, performative was the first thing that popped into my mind while catching up on this thread. If these people truly felt like they are up against a genocide, they would be taking drastic action. The only time that happened, to my knowledge, was last year when that guy shot at the cops on Regg's stream in Louisville.
