Police are often reluctant to touch things like this because the chain of custody and everything else relating to its authenticity are open to question. There's a reason cops are the ones who do criminal investigation. No matter how well intentioned, vigilante actions like this are problematic, and in the worst case, they get a predator to improve their opsec.
Chain of custody is a major issue, yes, and the ego-driven attention whoring these people do is certainly a problem, but there's also other obstacles, laziness, weird approaches or otherwise which law enforcement itself creates. It's much harder to be an effective decoy for law enforcement because these guys will often demand to FaceTime or whatever before going to a meet-up.
