Nelson’s closing argument is lucid, clear, calm, and to me, extremely persuasive. His perspective and perception line of reasoning and the clips and witness testimony he used to support it (how the late arriving MMA fighter was just wrong about what was happening etc) is moving me from “not guilty enough for the mob” to mistrial/hung jury.

In fact, I think he’s making a rock solid case for reasonable doubt and full acquittal, but it’s hard to believe that a current year jury will respond rationally to his arguments and not notice the dry tinder stockpiled around their city.

But on a personal level, watching the trial has convinced me that Derek Chauvin did what he was trained to do and did nothing wrong, he just had the bad luck to get the call to respond. It has also made me significantly more sympathetic to cops as I’ve found out more about what they do and why. And it has destroyed my prior nebulous George Floyd sympathy. It now appears undeniable to me that he was a person with very significant medical, personal, and addiction problems who had been on a collision course with an early death for many years. That’s very sad to me on a human level, but that’s all it is.

Chauvin should never have been prosecuted in this case. However, facts don’t matter now. The outrage machine needed a figurehead and this is the one it chose. Any jury action that isn’t returning an mega ultra guilty verdict will cause widespread violence, not just property damage. We’re beyond that now. We’re in what Lenin called the revolutionary situation, like increasing stress building up along a fault line. That stress will release when the jury comes back and ripple across the nation.

May God have mercy on us all.
