I believe he only waived the jury deciding on aggravating factors that would decide his sentencing. The jury gives the main verdict, the judge makes all the extra determinations.

I know people are leaving the force in droves now, but imagine 5-10 years when all those people that would have wanted to be cops just stop showing up as recruits.

In a court room it's actually understandable. Especially in a trial where people have made it a race issue. A little gay but it's more to remind the jury to be objective.
