Ok, like I've promised before, it's time to talk about Alex's best game idea to date, his long-lived passion, his favorite child, his magnum opus - of course, I'm talking about Lunar Scythe!
What, you've expected to see Yandere Simulator here? Heh, by the end of this post you will understand that it couldn't be any other way. So without further interruption let's dive into the saga of "EvaXephon, /v/irgins and Edgy Shite"!
So when does the story of Lunar Scythe begins? Well, the first actual sign of it's existence I was able to trace is in this
thread from October 31, 2013. "Bored indie game developer here. I want to start a new game project, but I don't have any ideas. I'm open for suggestions." - I am not convinced. "Bored unemployed programmer here, everything above still applies. At least I quit my job, though, instead of getting fired or laid off..." - ok, that's more like it, but still.
For Christ's sake, Alex! Do you really think people forgot who you are? You better hope no one's gonna notice th...
Ok, fuck it. Thread eventually gets spammed with loli pictures and goes to shit, which was the perfect omen for the inevitable coming of YS, however, don't think, that he shamelessly stole the idea of Lunar Scythe from /v/
It's unknown how far Alex was in his "work" on this game, but he already had the first art of Luna by that point. He probably wanted anons to confirm his taste in waifus, but instead got this:
Otherwise, thread is pretty unremarkable except for that one part, where Alex shills Boobie Clicker. After that he makes already mentioned thread "What if that infamous streamer EvaX made a game?" and has a meltdown in Mike's IRC channel. Then he spends some time recovering and
commissioning art with Luna until one fateful day, when he reveals his creation to the world.
On January 5th, 2014 Alex creates a
thread on SkullHeart forums - "I'm making a game. I call it Lunar Scythe". You may think, that it was somewhat less embarrassing that his interactions with chans and you will be wrong - it was a catastrophe from the start.
Firstly, Alex admits that his idea for a game is from "about a year ago". Then in a turn of events that is never going to repeat itself, says "I'll be replacing all of those temporary assets as soon as I can"
unless they become too iconic to get rid of. He also says "I was lucky enough to get
Mariel to sketch my character, and then I paid an artist to color the sketch", who was the animator of Skullgirls. Then it gets worse.
He says, that game is going to have two parts - minigames as some day jobs and beat-em-up during the night. Or as he puts it "do odd jobs around her city to earn money to buy new outfits", which is a shitty reward if you ask me. He also says "This demo only features the "hack and slash" part of the game" even though it is only half of a game and still it's blatantly unfinished. He admits that he's "spent hundreds of dollars paying dozens of artists to make concept art for this game", when he could buy a ton of books about C#.
The same day he posts gameplay on a dedicated channel Luna Nocturne:
He also links a downloadable copy of the game with a
README file, which is hilarious too:
- He outright states that "it is very early build" and that "combat system is unfinished", yet he called that shit "demo" in his opening post.
- He states AGAIN that everything is a temporal placeholders.
- Control scheme doesn't have mouse, doesn't use space and overall strange. I thought Alex's played games for all his life and should know better.
- You can send enemy into the air, but to chase him you need to tap DASH, even though this game has jump for some reason.
- Alex's plot description is surprisingly non-edgy, which he'll successfully fuck up later.
- ReadMe has THREE recommendations on how to increase frame rate while playing this one short level, that you can beat in 30 sec. How Alex managed to fuck that up is beyond me.
- For obvious reasons Alex links his stream there.
He then proceeds with answering questions and boy, oh, boy, he should've just said what was in ReadMe:
- "Luna is obsessed with the idea that this world is full of people who don't deserve to live", "Luna desperately wishes she could do something to rid the planet of such people", "But who are the guilty?" She asks. "That's for you to decide," Death replies", "Death is offering her the authority and the power to kill anyone she thinks deserves to die - and she thinks that a LOT of people deserve to die", "she could create a world that she actually wants to live in" - our protagonist, boys and girls, shittier edgier female Yagami Light.
- Death doesn't feel time, so it uses moon phases as deadlines for soul harvests. Why couldn't it use clocks, since they change too?
- "The game takes place in 2015, and there are 13 full moons in 2015, meaning Luna will have to face 13 of these enemies in total", Alex though he is going to finish this by 2015, yet he spend that year bothering /v/ with his shitty designs!
- He outright states that the model is from Unity Store, but "it was for $15 and with 20 animations", so he couldn't resist.
- He wanted levels to be short and combat to be flowing i.e. game would be mostly shitty minigames. Keep in mind, that plotwise Luna has to kill once a month, so... We would have to do 30 days of minigames for the one short beat-em-up level?
- Luna has a younger sister, who is comically successful. Alex has older half-brother, who isn't a fuck-up.
- This game was originally designed to be a mobile game. Yeah, three ways to fix the fps count is a good indicator of that.
- THIS FUCKING PART WITH "KILLING NEWBORN" AND "EUGENICS MAKE LUNA WONDER IF SHE SHOULD KILL CRIPPLES INSTEAD OF CRIMINALS" (also, how the fuck that one bitch can be a threat against any country, if she A - is just a tough bitch with some energy weapon, B - has those "powers" only when it's time to reap i.e. once a month):
- By the way, all the rivals "represent death in some form", like euthanasia, capital punishment, etc. Does that bitch that kills newborn represents abortions? So abortions are a thing, because children are useless? Really, Alex? Also, what death otaku girl represents? Suicide, cuz Japan?
- Alex's idea of RPG elements is "more health, damage or speed", no new attacks, combos, weapon mods, special moves, just this shit and outfits.
- If the game feels too repetitive, Alex promises more enemy types, yet his game has only thugs from Unity Store.
- Multiple fucking times he says "I don't want to spoil/you will find out in the full game" i.e. has no fucking idea and hypes his shitty prototype.
- He also shills his fighting game engine again, even though that forum was full of people who may'd seen his meltdown with their own eyes. Furthermore, he says "after I have Luna + 12 characters and animations to go with them, I might try making a fighting game starring this cast". Truly, some people are immune to good advice.
"But is it any good?, you may ask and all I can say is "what do you think?". It's really raw and uninspired, just Unity assets and a song from "Mad World", you can mash light attack and get free combos, while enemies are too slow to do anything about it. If you want more details, then read this
short review by
@LucasSomething.
However, the reception was pretty warm, since
no one actually bothered to play it people on that forum were way nicer than posters from /v/ and didn't want to be rude. If only Alex understood that.
Sadly, I don't think I have the first thread about Lunar Scythe, otherwise it looks like Alex waited two months to bother /v/ for the first time on
March 11, 2014. It's obvious from him saying "You may have seen this image before", that it's not the first time, but that's not the funniest part - for some reason Alex pretends that he is the artist, who works with him and he is making "one last attempt to save our game". "But maybe he had one", you may say, however, "PLACEHOLDER NAMES" and "She's not a Mary Sue" are dead giveaways.
Anons aren't impressed and trash this, well, trash for bad character design, edginess, looking like Bloodrayne/Ruby Rose from RWBY and scythe as a weapon. Alex tries to fix this by posting the first artwork, but anons still aren't impressed. Then not even 100 posts into thread someone posts this:
Then someone posts Alex asking advice on how to make energy scythe on
Unity forums. They also call his gameplay idea "a Persona rip-off", even though Alex said that he ripped-off No More Heroes. Then someone posts Alex's face and thread gets flooded with shitposting. However, Alex was far from giving up.
Next fucking day he creates a
thread, where outright asks /v/ to pick from one of the 8 designs! Some take him seriously, but many just trash all of them. Then they also trash the screenshot from his prototype and Luna's character:
This is also where Alex tries to play "I've been using Unity for 3 years now and I've already shipped a few commercial games" card and says, that the game wasn't officially announced, even though it was on SH forums! Other highlights include these two moments:
That's how you know is was Alex.
And what Alex says after an entire thread of grilling? Basically, "I like this character too much to change anything".
It's hard to say how many times Alex'd made this thread since, but then he had at least
another one on March 25, where, you guessed it, he asked /v/ for designs again(he says "last week" so there probably was another one)! This time Alex says, that he has a prototype, but it is "too raw to show", which didn't stop him on SH forums! He also shows Death's concept art, which looks like it's from Crysis.
He also talks about his characters and anons call them "edgy" and "shit", so disillusioned Alex decides to crawl back to SH forums for the advice with a bunch of new commissioned art. However, it doesn't go so well as he expected:
- Alex says "I love a lot of things about the original design. I love sexy, busty femme fatales, I love dark anti-hero characters, and I love energy scythes. I don't want to give any of that up. However, I understand how the design might be unappealing to others, because some of those things are cliche or unoriginal or stereotypical." i.e. "I want others to like what I like".
- "I didn't want to be seen as an "idea guy" who spits out game ideas but never produces anything" - no comments.
- "In the past couple of months, I've played some games that gave me tons of inspiration for a much better combat system" - not an idea guy at all.
- "I'm totally aware of how ridiculously impractical it would be to use a scythe as a weapon." - yep, after all those threads.
But then unthinkable happens and someone finally plays his demo. Right there they say, that "dash to jump" is a retarded idea, that enemies are slow as fuck and the game is boring. Speaking of jumps:
Alex spent months playing games and paying for new arts with Luna
to jerk-off to, yet he overlooked this? Something tells me, that he played this level once, just so he could record a video and show it afterwards.
Alex immediately says "I shouldn't have called it a demo", then breaking down to "Maybe I should have called it a "proof of concept". Or maybe I should have called it a "programming test". Or maybe I shouldn't have posted anything at all just yet...", oh, God, it's Mike Z chat all over again! He probably tries to make another
thread on /v/, but it quickly dies.
So what could Alex do after that disaster? Fall back, learn more about gamedesign and come back stronger? Quit entirely? Try to shill another idea, but somehow edgier, dumber and forever in placeholder phase... Yes, he made a thread about YS on April 1st and despite all of that shit mirroring Lunar Scythe perfectly, /v/ was eating that for way longer than they should've, since he was pandering to their and his own weebery and fetishes, but that's the story for another day.
Hell, at some point they mentioned EvaXephon in YS thread without realizing the irony!
That should've been it, Alex had an idea that people liked, they pandered to him non-stop, he even started a Patreon. What else can you dream of?
Well, apparently about shoving Luna down their throats after all, since on September 22, 2014
Alex tries to ask /v/ for designs again! Since his dick is moist enough after months of YS threads, he refuses to ditch the scythe from the getgo.
He also spews that "Death "scans" Luna's soul, and after interpreting the "data" gave her scythe - really impractical weapon. Also:
Why not a broom then?
Death's motivation is as edgy as you may expect:
It also seems that Alex and Luna have too much in common:
People keep saying that Alex is just an idea guy, so he posts gameplay video - instant hilarity comes:
Remember, Alex's said on SH forums that we will find out what soul is in a full game, yet he clearly pulled this explanation out of his ass. Also, it is clear, that Alex was samefagging:
In the end Alex melts the fuck down and admits that he is the one who decides what criticism is
He also calls this one level a demo and outright says "I want to please as much of /v/ as possible, while also remaining pleased myself." But he didn't give up.
Two days later
he jumps to /v/ again, now to ask some artist to draw another fucking concept of Luna. He even links his thread from SH! By that point people are so done with Alex, that they begin shitting on him right there:
Yes, he links that one short video with one level from almost a year ago!
Next stop is December 19, 2014. I don't have all the threads about Lunar Scythe, but from the ones I have, it seems that Alex was shitting /v/ at least once a week at this point. It's also a nice inside into how he was working on YS at the time. What I can say for sure is that he kept commissioning art during that time:
Yes,
this is the thread, where Alex spergs that he isn't idea guy, that he made 8 games, but then confesses that he was just a bug tester and coded some mobile cashgrabs. It didn't give Alex better designs, but it gave the best Lunar Scythe content ever:
Anons get so vicious, that this happens:
Alex is still crying that he is not an idea guy, but he is not an AAA-developer (sounds familiar?), so /v/ should have faith in him, but it's too late. He is grilled so hard, that he posts these:
Anyone reasonable enough would stop this crap and concentrate his efforts on YS, but not Alex - he was too used to asspats from /v/, so he wanted to push further and further until they're gonna like his waifu. And these efforts were about to come to their bitter end.
On January 5th, 2015 Alex makes another attempt at stockholm-syndrome-ing/v/ into loving Luna and it goes as well as you may expect. By the responses alone it's obvious that people were pissed beyond comprehension, they outright tell him to fuck off. Someone posts EvaXephons deviantart and they begin shitting on Eva again. Alex doesn't respond well to it:
However, that wasn't the worst thing that happened:
The shock is so strong that some anons refuse to see the connection:
At this point Alex could abandon Lunar Scythe forever and deny everything, but he decided to tighten the noose in his chat:
Then Alex outright admits that he won't stop.
And that the gameplay video is year old, so he literally spent all this time by commissioning art and getting on anon's last fucking nerve.
And thus Luna became the femme fatale, that ruined Alex. However, their lovestory was far from over. For some time Alex tried to pretend that it's not a biggie and even posted Luna with YanDev's tripcode.
Eventually Alex left 4chan for 8chan and then left boards completely for Reddit hugbox, but like I said, this is the story for another day. Was it the end of Lunar Scythe? Well, this game didn't have a start to begin with. Was it the end of Luna? You wish!
Like in her backstory, despite being dead, she keeps on living by consuming souls of the living.
You can see her in computer class.
You can find her in Yancord of the same game:
And how could I forget about music club leader Miyuji Shibakoya? I guess, now YS has two pieces of Alex's fap material.
This what you get if you try to enter EvaXephon's chatroom.
Alex himself didn't stop commissioning art with Luna after that fiasco on 4chan as you can assume from
this page.
He is ready to buy a game if it has a character that looks like Luna in it.
He also admitted multiple times that he would ditch YS in favor of
spamming /v/ with commissions working on Lunar Scythe again.
The irony is that he was putting as much effort into the game he claims he wanted to make as he puts into the game that he claims is like a prison to him. He never really wanted to make that game either.
