Very misleading headline on that AP story:

Colorado is a very gay-friendly state in general (not just a few urban neighborhoods). http://www.gaycolorado.com/

The whole state is a queer haven really.

More likely to get beat up (or worse) for being queer in such traditional (and high crime) gay venues as San Francisco or New York City.
