It was funny even pre-COVID when DSP would only leave his house once a week to "run errands", and the other six days of the week he legit did not leave his house.Mandatory PE has been the only exercise most children have gotten for ages now. Quarantine or not, the heat death of in-person schooling is pretty horrifying from a health perspective, you don't need to worry about the gym teachers if there's no gym. I anticipate this chronic inactivity killing more people than COVID directly in the decades to come, as they grow up fat and stupid and cardiovascularly deficient.
Educating parents on the need to exercise hasn't worked, and the school system is a shitty band-aid in the first place, what's even a good solution? Japan made waistline limits, Korea has mandatory armed service, and Vietnam doesn't have enough food to get fat, I don't see any of those approaches going over well in the US, the UK, or Europe.
Now people are living like that unironically, and it may not stop even after the measures are all lifted. Businesses seeing that remote from home work is possible for white collar workers are going to put a lot of former cubical farms into their own homes.
