Instead, it landed him in jail.
The arrest of Malik Sanchez for the sick stunt on Feb. 13, broadcast on his “Smooth Sanchez” YouTube channel — has revealed a toxic internet subculture that encourages cruel, dangerous behavior.

Sanchez, the self-proclaimed “Content King” and “YouTube Legend,” was a prominent personality in the IP2 streaming community. IP2 refers to a pioneer of the genre, Internet Poseidon.

“The followers get their joy from seeing the livestreamer getting into as much trouble and mischief as possible,” YouTube personality BXBeastBoy said in a video slamming the IP2 community.
“All I know is that he is negative and that his community is toxic,” BXBeastBoy added in an email to the Daily News.
Sanchez, 19, embraced the “trouble and mischief” formula to an extreme degree. Crowded lower Manhattan provided a steady stream of potential targets for his mean-spirited, racist, sexist pranks.

“He’s done some of the most horrific stuff on stream. The things he’s said to people — harassing and terrorizing retailers, students at NYU, people walking on the street. It’s bad,” said a 40-year-old livestream enthusiast, Michael, who declined to give his last name for fear of an avalanche of online harassment.
He called himself an incel — an involuntary celibate — and praised Elliot Rodger, the most well-known member of the misogynistic online culture. Rodger killed six people and himself in 2014 near the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara after posting videos describing his loathing for women who rejected him.
“Many of them announce in advance what they’re going to do,” said Howard University Professor Carolyn Byerly, who studied the incel movement. “It’s very interactive. They record it. They play it. There’s this whole sick loop. They announce it, they go do it, they put it into circulation. And they engage others.”

Footage shot by a bystander shows a dozen FBI agents were used to arrest the baby-faced Sanchez at the East Village apartment he shares with his mother, grandmother and uncle.

Sanchez was denied bail on April 14 because he presents a danger to the community. His attorney, Federal Defender Clay Kaminsky, filed new papers Thursday arguing Sanchez should be released from Essex County Jail while awaiting trial.
“The alleged threat was in the nature of a puerile stunt,” Kaminsky wrote. “He has clearly engaged in some confrontational interactions, including the charged incident, for their shock value, encouraged by real-time internet likes and donations.”

Indeed, Sanchez monetized loathsome behavior. Viewers who donated as little as $2 got the privilege of having an embarrassing “text to speech” message — usually something racist, sexist or threatening — broadcast from a speaker Sanchez carried with him during hijinks.
“You can see the comments scrolling – and he’s being egged on by these people across the internet who are trying to get him to do things and donating money so that he does them. And, you know, they’re offensive,” Kaminsky said during Sanchez’s initial appearance in Manhattan Federal Court.
In one video, Sanchez giggled as a cartoonish voice hollered a racial slur on a crowded street. In another, a mere $2 tip resulted in Sanchez broadcasting a different bomb threat not cited by prosecutors.

“Attention everyone this is not a joke I have a bomb. I have bomb,” the message declared before starting a countdown. Sanchez, meanwhile, said “Allahu akbar” while filming three scared bystanders in Union Square.
Sanchez’s arrest generated an outpouring of grief on a message board frequented by “IP2″ fans.
“He’s one of the most notorious (streamers) for sure,” Michael said.

“He’s also one of the most well respected in that community because he creates ridiculous content.”
His fans and critics placed him in a pantheon of trolls alongside the likes of Baked Alaska, who is charged with allegedly streaming as he stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6. The far-right troll earned a reputation for using pepper spray during his livestreams, which fans nicknamed “content spray.”
Sanchez, similarly, blasted pepper spray at people during livestreams on at least five different occasions, a prosecutor said during his court appearance.

On March 20 he allegedly pepper sprayed a man in the East Village and clocked him in the head with a cellphone and tripod, according to a criminal complaint.
Kaminsky insisted Sanchez was no threat, but is instead “finding approval” for obnoxious behavior on the internet through a “feedback loop.”
“We should see him for what he is: he’s an attention seeking 19-year-old,” Kaminsky said. The lawyer added that some of livestreamed stunts were “scripted content.”

But prosecutors cited Sanchez’s own words, arguing his behavior was becoming increasingly dangerous.
“I’m an incel. But I guess streaming kind of helps me therapeutically in a sense. It keeps me out of, like, my incel mindset. So, you know, it allows me to have fun,” Sanchez said.
