Jim Sterling / James "Stephanie" Sterling / James Stanton/Sexton & in memoriam TotalBiscuit (John Bain) - One Gaming Lolcow Thread

Holy fuck dude It's literally just Mario saying "Luigi?" calm the fuck down lmao. Were 3 Luigi's mansion games trying to black mirror brainwash children into consooming mario games so luigi wasnt lonely? Surely it can't be the fact these characters have been around since the fucking 80s and are usually in the same game as each other? Kids aren't as dumb as you think.

Also, This thing doesn't even have wifi. it has to connect to an iphone app via bluetooth if you want certain scorekeeping features and shit like that. I hate forced phone integration on shit just as much as anyone else So I won't defend that shit but framing it as a dystopian capitalist survelliance state nightmare scenario is fucking stupid. You want examples of shit like that? Look no further than shit like Amazon alexa or siri. Bing bing wahoo lego man ain't the guy you're looking for there.
Boiling frog man.
The older we all get the more we see things change.
If you want to be that cliche guy who ends up saying "when did things get this way" instead of paying attention to all the babysteps that lead us to those "ways". Well, you do you.

People can cry absurdity or alarmist. Which may be true, but being an alarmist doesn't seem to hurt. In fact the reality tends to be they are simple over exaggerating rather than being outright wrong. Given he bitched about loot boxes for years, only to finally see the world take notice cause "muh star war" tells me he should keep doing what he's doing.

Always found that funny, that for troons, being catcalled, harassed and groped is considered the peak of femininity for them. I'm waiting for an article to come out where a troon gets raped and thanks their rapist for finally making them feel like a woman.
Old comic but obligatory, many of them agree with this

Again not rape but a transwoman did confirm what you say writing an article saying how they loved being catcalled (apologies in advance for linking to shitty vice, but at least its another old article)

I remember this article got pushback from real women saying being catcalled and followed by grown men when they are just beginning puberty is not a good feeling and I think its more proof this is a fetish to a lot of them and how they are not really "mentally" women.

This isn't even a "boiling frog" thing, at least with the Mario Lego Luigi shit. The alexa shit I mentioned however IS very much Boiling frog dystopian nightmare world stuff.

In terms of the "lootbox alarmism" thing Jim wasn't even the first nor the last person to bitch about lootboxes when they started out. Lootbox shit was complained about by everybody from day 1, same with paid DLC, which came before it. Once the industry decided it was standard it became the standard and people just kinda have to live with the bullshit. Games as a service and server based game streaming really are the things that are the current push via companies and once again generally the sentiment seems to be the same. Gaming is and has been in a kinda shitty state in terms of prices and media preservation getting more complex to manage. Whats going on with the industry is very much less a boiling frog kinda situation in the normal sense and more the frog keeps hopping out but someone keeps putting them back in, eventually making walls so the frog can't jump out. I still remember early PSP era where every company had like their own sites to download the DLC for their games off of before the Playstation store became a thing. It was a magical time and occasionally you'd find some shit like an official animation or some shit like advent children. For free. Shit was fucking cool and I miss it. Now you could proably easily spin this as some "grand capitalist conditioning scheme" or some shit but It's less that and more a lot of big companies are somewhat incompetent and greedy as hell, not always at the same time but it's usually one of the 2. Get enough intelligent people in a room for a prolonged enough time huffing each others farts and you'll end up with room temperature Iq behavior. They more or less gave shit for free till they realized "hey wait, we can make money off this too!" Player backlash to microtransactions and lootboxes are actually why a lot more games that have them these days make them completely optional, as opposed to "optional" int he sense of if you don't pay the fee you can't access the things. Shit was really egregious for a while nearly 10 years back now. "complete" editions of games also are a thing partially because of this. You occasionally still end up with complete fucking lunacy of old, like Square enix deciding to make "Avengers" A game already fucked over by them deciding to make it a "games as a service" model despite being a singelplayer game with optional co-op missions, and "improved it" by making it even more of a fucking unpleasant grind to unlock anything instead of actually fixing the issues and making it so you don't have to be connected tot the internet to play a fucking single player campaign.

Tl;Dr Everybody fucking hates the direction the AAA industry keeps trying to go in but has barely any say in shit. Jim bitching about lootboxes or Luigi existing does not make him Nostradamus

Agreed. People are acting like Jim's sermons are some sort of revelation when all he does is preach to the choir. If you're a fan of Jim's stuff then you either already know or agree with what he says (at least as far as vidya is concerned) so you were never gonna fall for the AAA crap anyway. The people who are propping up the shitty direction the industry is going are either whales (who by dent of being whales can't be reasoned with) or those for whom gaming is a casual hobby; they buy CoD or FIFA every year and play it on and off til the next one comes out.

These are the groups Jim would need to reach if he actually wanted to have any hope of affecting positive change, but he never will because:
A) The majority of those groups don't give a fuck about the business side of gaming.
B) Most people don't possess the willpower needed to form the kind of significant boycott that would bring an end to this stuff.
C) He looks like a fucking circus clown and nobody without prior knowledge would take him seriously.

People love to bring up Battlefront II as evidence that consumers can change the actions of shitty publishers, but that was the exception, not the rule. EA grossly overplayed their hand with that game and made the grind so ridiculous and the gambling so obvious they had no choice but to roll it back, but it hasn't stopped games like Marvel's Avengers or Fortnite from exploiting FOMO with their marketplaces; they've removed the gambling aspect but the nickel-and-diming is still there and as obnoxious as ever.

TL;DR The fact that Cyberpunk --despite broken promises, horrendous studio working conditions and being literally unplayable on last gen consoles-- still sold over 13 million copies with only 30,000 being refunded tells you everything you need to know. Jim is screaming at the fucking tide.

You can't ignore the orange and focus on the apple man. They are both fruits. The boiling frog example is everywhere, its not just one thing or the other. Its politics, gaming, technology. What have you. Its why I said the more we age the more we see it. I wasn't strictly talking about gaming.

You may be correct about jim not being the only lootbox bitch machine or alarmist. But I will be damned if he wasn't the most persistent. After overwatch, people sort of just gave up when it came to loot boxes. They would give a sigh here and there. However jim did full episodes of his show focused around lootboxes. Its the amount of attention he gave it compared to every other gaming talking head I watched. Quite frankly i stopped watching most of them because they were just boring. Most of the gaming talking heads are all the same if you ask me. I think back then I watched a guy named cleanprincegaming, then there was skill up, upper echelon gaming, uhhhh gameranx and some other one, oh ya yong yea. They were all so fucking samey. They all talked about the same things at the same time. Then you have jim in his box of anger ranting about loot boxes. I found it to be different. He would hyper focus on things (like the mario lego video) and just tear it apart. It was simply different and engaging. Not everything he makes is worth while but at least he isn't homogenized boredom.

The fact he is a lolcow pretty much proves at least that last point to a T.

P.S I will say yong yea and I think gameranx gets a view from me every few months. But all the others, meh.

There's a finite amount of your life where your entire body is developing. They really want to say that interrupting this while the rate and the way that your body changes is itself changing is fine and reversible. Yeah, you can reverse the blocking effect, but you can't reverse the changes caused by interrupting development. It's the most CNN-style "truth" imaginable.

Comparing Luigi calling for Mario in Luigi's Mansion to the lego toy is retarded though. Luigi calls out in the Mansion games because it makes sense in that context, he's a cowardly character lost in a haunted house. There's no similar reason for the Mario toy to start asking for Luigi at the same time Lego releases Luigi toys except to convince people to buy it. It's an update which will try to force its way into a product you already own which provides no benefit to you or your kids and objectively makes it more annoying to play with while reminding you to consume more products. Framing it as a nefarious brainwashing scheme is retarded, but it's still an anti-consumer move, the exact same thing Jim has been complaining about for years, just a little creepier because it's in a physical toy.

If Jim had taken the ownership rights approach instead of crying about Transformers, he could've at least made the point less hysterically than screeching about capitalism. Still, if Jim is going to keep hammering the same points over and over, I'd rather he focus on this stuff than wrestling and estrogen.
I'm not saying Jim is a prophet for pointing it out, that it's going to bring about Skynet, or even that it's scummier than any other advertising covertly aimed at kids, but children's toys getting hidden updates after you've already paid for them that make them worse for consumers is still worth complaining about.

Yeah I'm going to need some serious citations on puberty blockers being reversible, preferably backed by showing someone who got off of them at magical age 18 and went through normal puberty there and then as if nothing happened, no long lasting damage of any kind.

If what these people are doing results in some damaged individuals I just hope they put the preachers in their crosshairs before they do anyone else or themselves a decade from now.
Puberty blockers sounds nice. Unapproved by the FDA off brand use of anti-Cancer medication sounds horrible. It's all in the branding. Look up Lupron.

Call me a skeptic, but I seriously doubt that the majority of the catcalling and harassment stories that troons tell ever happened. Either that or they think that someone saying "Stay away from my kid, freak." is catcalling.
It’s obvious actually. If someone looks like they’re staring at an apparition it means they’re taken back by your feminine beauty. If someone screeches frightfully they’re just too scared to hit on you. Another often misunderstood signal is when a woman pulls out bear repellant. It’s her way of saying “uwu you have nice titties” and “knock me up mommy.”

Can someone with tolerance post a tldw of the video? I can't make it past the 10% mark in any of his videos anymore.
Jim AAA-bridged:

Bobby Kotick is now paid less, but Jim thinks he should be paid even less.

CD Projekt Red board (5 people) got a 28 million dollar bonus, which is about the same as the rest of the company got between them.

Capitalism is bad.

This video just so NEARLY gets it but any point being made is derailed by "Capitalism Is bad! Clearly, capitalism has failed!" type shit. It gives off the vibe of less being actually genuinely angry at people in charge of companies for treating their employees like shit and more just using the whole situation as a crude cudgel to beat down the "Capitalism" to stay in the good graces of the political youtube in-group He's in. It's so nearly a return to form of actual vidya events commentary but I don't think we'll be getting anything genuine from Jim anymore in this current state of things.
