With today's music and non vidya-game entertainment being absolute shit, it's not rare at all. The 80s was the last high-point of GOOD music, embracing the end of Disco and Punk while giving birth to multiple genres like New Wave, Synthpop, House and early Techno, Hip-Hop, earliest Grunge and more while cresting 70s creations like Hair Metal, the above mentioned Disco and Glam Metal as well.
My daughters grew up appreciating 80s and some 90s (Avril Lavigne, etc) music. To this day my youngest daughter's favourite musician is Larry Gowan (A Criminal Mind, Strange Animal, Moonlight Desires etc) an 80's Canadian and American radio staple who is currently the keyboardist and vocalist for Styx, another GenX legend of a band.
When the current crop of 'top 40' is the same mindless drivel (and often written by the same one or two people but performed by assorted musicians) with only the occasional flash of brilliance amidst the bubblegum, where else are you going to go but the last generation's best music? Like us GenX'ers grew up loving Boomer late 60s to early 70's works from the Animals to the Beatles to Rush to Led Zeppelin, our kids love our music.
