Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Several known names (mostly people at Disney TVA) took to Twitter to air their sentiments about the situation. Proudly subbed to spanish.

TL; DR:
- Owen Dennis starts a mega-thread talking about the standards of the industry today, which have not really changed since the 90s. Despite animation reaching its cultural peak, the studios still expect animators to tolerate senseless deadlines.
- The crews are offended that they rarely receive the same amount of respect they have to give to the studios and are expected to just stand it.
- Animators are becoming more well known than ever and as such people can reach them to make their opinions heard. That doesn't apply to executives, who can get away with anything.
- Animators get hired for their following counts and are expected to give free publicity to their projects.
- It is advised that you make your properties into comics first so you have leverage about how the IP is used.

Man, i really feel bad for all of these people who probably work 10 to 12 hour shifts just to make something, only for it to be screwed over by incompetent execs who act like they care about these shows, when really... they don't

One difference that I should note, the middle image was a sketch that was kept in a locked desk drawer, the bottom painting, AFAIK, is one of Carls quite expensive water paintings that'd go on to sell for a good bit of cash, people really like duck-faced women apparently.

If the industry's this bad why do we rarely if ever hear about strikes in the animation business?

Just finished Invincible and I liked it. Wasn't something to lose your mind about but it's entertaining, Mark can be a retard sometimes but he's still charming as a protagonist and the other characters are as well with exception of two: Rex is just an asshole, who stays an asshole minus some good moments in the end but he's nothing compared with drama queen Amber, fuck Amber, at the start I didn't mind her and I thought people were exaggerating how much of a bitch she was but then she reveals that she always knew that Mark was Invincible and I'm like "couldn't you just cut him some slack then? Dude gets beaten almost daily, mind you, Mark is not 100% innocent in this but c'mon he should just have stayed with Eve.Worst is that the series tries to put all the blame on Mark with just feels like bullshit.
I actually liked the Robot subplot, yeah it went anywhere and felt like filler and yes the implications of it are creepy but considering how fucked up both his situation and Monster girl's are I think is fine how they did it. The final fight was pretty good, now I can see what thay scene got so popular and other than that the animation is ok for most of the time but that CGI is so fucking obvious specially in the last episode that is distracting. Really liked the running gag that anytime someone says Invincible for the first time it cuts to the title screen.
Also, how the fuck secret identities work in this universe? Mark gets found out two times despite having a mask but then characters like Eve and his father never seem to rise a stink about it.

It is advised that you make your properties into comics first so you have leverage about how the IP is used.
This seems to confirm what I had hear recently: comics now are nothing more that glorificated pitches for tv series.

Because the companies who these people work for will often try to blacklist them for unionizing, and if they don't have jobs, people like Owen and Matt essentially screwed
They are unionized, but TAG isn't what it could be - for example, the average animation writer, unlike the average live-action writer, doesn't get royalties from their scripts. Not even creators are exempt.

Now you may ask, why not go to the WGA and sign up with them? It's not that simple. They'll take animation... but it's really only primetime adult cartoons that get their contracts. I heard from people who were veterans of the business that in their day, the WGA considered animation writers to be only slightly better than, say, porn writers. I doubt the situation's changed all that much - especially when you consider that the WGA didn't get involved with the BoJack Horseman unionization effort.

(And I don't think they consider storyboard artists writers, and in a day where so many shows use boards instead of scripts that makes a lot of difference.)

All the same, however, if it weren't for the union the business would be so much worse.

And, incidentally, there have been strikes and picket lines in animation recently, but you never really hear about them.

The entire issue with Amber is a good old fashioned two sides kinda thing. We see things from Mark's perspective because he's the main character. He goes through all this shit no one else really can fathom. The established superheroes have gone through the same thing and view normal people through a different lense. They hold themselves to a higher standard overall. While we see what he goes through, we don't see what Amber does aside from being mad at him for missing all their agreed plans. She does, so she's pissed at Mark when he keeps up the schtick after saying things would be different.

Keep in mind the words she uses. She's blaming Mark for how she feels, a classic relationship fuckup. He's not trying to understand her point either or willing to concede any ground to gain any. I've seen plenty of people pissed at both Mark and Amber over their issues. Makes me wonder how many times they've been in relationships.

The secret identity thing is a joke because they're overused, pretty obvious after a while, and just plain boring when it's the source of a lot of drama in capeshit. It stops being a concern.

I understand that Mark has to take some part of the blame but for me it's hard to see both Amber's and Mark's lives in the same level of difficulty, the way I see it Mark has to put with a lot of bullshit specially at the end and always tries to do the right things even if it doesn't comes up as planned. So that's why I don't understand why she just didn't came forward and talked to Mark about him being Invincible once that she figured it out, I mean the guy could get kill in any moment in his line of job so might as well treat everytime as the last one.

I hope they land on their feet and get treated better for S3+.
I want to believe but they are already not off to a great start, both this show and the owl one got they budgets cut in half thanks to Wuflu.

Remember the scene where Debby treats Nolan being trapped in a different dimension as him being late for dinner? It's like that. She's still being unreasonable, but she's a teenager who thinks she has things figured out: She doesn't.

This probably would've landed better if she didn't have a go at Mark during the university visit for doing his Invincible thing despite the fact she knows he's Invincible. Not to mention how she just slides back into his life in the finale without asking Mark how he feels about that. There's assertive and then there's domineering.

Her issue was he didn't tell her the truth. I'm not saying she's in the right, but she can't help her feelings. The ending felt a lot more like her realizing he was dealing with shit though her reasoning is self-centered. She cares for him and likes being with him, but their relationship isn't going to last without a great deal of trust and love, what Nolan had with Debbie.

Maybe they'll improve it or acknowledge her faults next season. Then again, this is current year where blacks and women can do no wrong. We'll see. The actual plot makes up for the current holes in the romance.

Yeah I don't hate her or anything, but I would hope they smooth her out a bit before (comic spoilers) they inevitably break up and Mark and Eve get together.

Holy shitsnacks and crackers, the devil must be ice skating to work if the creator of Final fucking Space is the calm one here. All these guys rendered their "my opinions are my own" excuse in their bios as fucking moot. I get they're pissed off but what are they gonna do about it? Every single one of them has productions going on right now that can be stopped for any dumb reason the companies want. And the companies keep the rights forever (unless they want to fight them in the thunderdome court)! If you're gonna start some movement don't let your enemy have this big of a leverage over you.

Parker Simmons being Captain Hindsight there isn't helping. "Oh you should've made it a comic and maybe this wouldn't have happened." Yeah and that's why love for the medium is dying (among other things), it's a means to an end, not because you wanted to tell your story the best way you could. Eastman and Laird made their TMNT deal in the fucking 80s, same as Lucas did with Star Wars. Different times, different contracts. Now media companies are so afraid of losing money that if they don't have more than 60% of control of your shit, they'll find something they do have majority rule over. The game's changed pal. Play it or don't. don't

Too bad this gang of skilled and knowledgeable industry workers twatter bitching can't follow Vivzie's lead and evolve animation production into its logical next step by putting powr back into the paying public away from investors, making "freelancer" stop being synonymous with "starving artist" and leave these fuckshit corporations behind in the dark ages where they belong OH WAIT. they can.

I really feel bad for the Amphibia crew. As an SUfag I saw plenty of leaks in my time and having read details about how the show was made via the artbooks it really did a number on the morale of Rebecca etc. I hope they land on their feet and get treated better for S3+.
Becky came from AT that was filled with tumblrfucks and went on to hire tumblrfucks for SU. What she got was what she (and the network) wanted. Amphibia will be very lucky if they get a S3 after this if there's this much trouble in paradise.

I agree that SU definitely got fairer deal than most once you get past the whole leaks shit. Disney on the other hand seems to hate going past a fourth season for their shows, so I wouldn't be surprised if Amphibia gets the Tangled treatment and they end it on S3.

The thing is that Amphibia has been already confirmed for a 3rd season I think it was announced before the premier of the second. The third one is also the last one because that's what Matt the creator envisioned to tell his story but I doubt he would have got a 4th one anyways, rumor has it that after the Star Vs. clusterfuck of an ending Disney got scared to give a fourth season to their shows and even show magical elements.

That's good then. Star VS's issue was that the showrunner actually got more seasons than she wanted so it ended up being written as it went along and boy did it show.

From what I've seen of the Invincible adaption I'm a bit miffed that they've gone the old route where, as happens in what feels like at least 60 percent of the time in media, in fictional romances the male character has to do absolutely everything for the girl, while she just waits around for him to be worthy of her presence and this in Invincible may be one of the most glaring examples.

Besides, the notion that Mark was obligated to tell his high-school girlfriend that he only really known for awhile his most important secret that could endanger him and her is extremely wrong. The whole nonsense over the secret identity secret-keeping was done so badly, so obviously done to create drama but in a pointless and stupid way.

"Mark, we need to help these people or they'll be killed!" :Mark helps as Invincible: "MARK WHY DID YOU RUN?!"

Then for the kicker, episodes later - "Yeah I knew, but why did you lie and keep secrets?"

In the original comic, the Amber character doesn't even show up until the 11th issue and it's only for a single panel. They over-exaggerated the relationship on the show for no real explainable reason which is why the story suffers.

they went off to wall with the romantic realism, even if they didn't intend to

This was pretty much the backstory of Long Gone Gulch. The creators worked in the industry and seemed frustrated they couldn’t do what they want. So they crowdfunded a pilot and after years of hard work, got their pilot on the air. LGG was pretty well received and while it’s fate is still up in the air, prospects are looking good in light of Hazbin’s A24 deal.

Why Owen and other up and coming animators don’t follow suit is unknown, besides the obvious bitching on twitter is easier.

That’s a good sign all things considered. Three seasons is good for a story driven show like this and it’s what the creator wanted anyways. I just hope they stick the landing for the finale and that they don’t pull any Korra shenanigans.
