I think it comes from you using (i'm assuming) an average to pin what's considered middle class, rather than a median, which is what literally everybody else does.
I kind of have a problem with both methods, to be honest. A fixed number, be it median or average, does not really quantify "middle class lifestyle" as some people can live better for 100k in Winnipeg than other people can live for 400k in SF. Still, looking at places where one can easily earn 400k, those being major cities (think financial or IT hubs), your expenses to maintain the same lifestyle will easily cost most of your paycheck,

Also:
Middle class according to the Pew Research Center (and defined by the US Census Bureau)
Yes, that is the problem right there.

Edit: I thought you people are supposed to be progressive. Isn't raising the poverty line one of your causes? I actually agree with this one. https://www.dataforprogress.org/blog/2020/5/26/americans-want-to-raise-the-poverty-line

OK, let's go with another number then, let's say the middle class is the 50% of people between the highest 25% and lowest 25%. Guess what?

48.2% of US households fall into an income range of between 45k a year and 150k a year. This isn't perfect, as 33% of house holds fall below the 45k threshold, and 18% above the 150k threshold, but the vast majority of the US population falls into this range, a middle class if you will. Only 10% of households make over 200k per year. Also, if you think you're spending 400k in SF to maintain a 100k lifestyle in Winnipeg you're fucking high. Cost of living adjustment for SF is not 4 times that as Winnipeg.

To me that just shows that more Americans are living below the real poverty line than I initially thought. Also, who lives in SF and isn't high?

...Do you not know how to read charts or statistics? The top 10% of earners in the US earn 200k or more as a household income. Where the hell is your tard wrangler?
Why not 500k and 1%? If you're incapable of extrapolating from simple data, it explains why you think 400k a year is unattainable wealth. Or do you not think it's possible for most of the population to be below the poverty line?

Overall this is straight out of Putin's book of tricks, the Russian government wants to artificially keep the poverty line there low too, so you're in good company.

Edit: Just realized you don't know how a poverty line is actually calculated so you think it's based solely on the household income. :stress:

No, I understand how it's calculated, and I do think it's too low. The poverty line though still has nothing to do do with the idea of 'what is the middle class', which still certainly isn't fucking 400k a year income.

Okay then, stay mad and stay poor.

Given the growing gap between the actually wealthy classes and everyone else, the numbers cannot be increased linearly. If the poverty threshold is increased (multiplied by two as the progressives want), the wealth threshold (200k) on your chart needs to be correctly adjusted as well, at least multiplied by 6 to 8 to account for the growing wealth disparity. Then once other numbers are adjusted accordingly, middle class will end up being somewhere around 400-600k. That's it.

Of course if the US government actually does those changes, they'll need to shell out a lot more money to people who are living below the poverty line. It's better to just keep lying to them that they're middle class and leave them hungry.

If you had a job and didn't live off a tugboat for being so autistic, you'd realize how much $400k per year is. That's a ton of money

It's a ton of money if you live with your parents and your expenses consist of ramen noodles, a purchase of a new video game once a quarter, and a pornhub subscription. The moment you get a family, some land, and a boat or a cottage, it's not that much money.

It's a lot of money, even with those things. The median house price (via google) is $286,000 per year. So add in land and such and that's what, $350k? You could pay that off within 5 years easily with a $400k/year income even with a 50% tax rate (which is way higher than we have now).

The medium house hold expenses of a US family is around $50k (again, via google), not counting housing (covered in the above house scenario). So that would mean, even with a 50% tax (which, again, is way more than the actual rate), that'd be $200k left over to pay off expenses ($50k) and the mortgage. You could easily put $100k towards the mortgage and still have $50k left over for other various things.

I know you don't have a job, but go ask your dad and mom how much they wish they made $400k per year.

Congratulations, you just described what a middle class budget should break down to. Paying off mortgage and having a percentage left for savings. Now try that with 80k.

Easy.

$300k mortgage over 30 years (assuming $50k down payment) would be roughly $10k per year. $80k, after taxes, is about $55k. So that leaves $45k left over, which pretty much covers it. $100k income is considered pretty well off in most areas (not in cities like NYC, SF, LA, etc but in most of the country). Although buying a $350k house on $80k income would be really stupid

You are seriously out of touch if you think $400k is median income. Again, I know you don't have a job due to crippling autism, but you should at least ask your parents when they get home tonight.

If you think that living in crippling poverty is still being middle class, you're just fooling yourself here. Try including unforeseen medical expenses and see how fast you end up in a debt spiral. Surviving paycheck to paycheck does not make you middle class.

Having a surplus of $200k per year after taxes is not middle class, retard. Do you know how much those tendies your mom makes for you costs? A couple of bucks

HHH sounds like a miser, lol. Do you always buy day-old bread at the bakery?

Edit: Looking closer at your calculations, seems you never owned property. Never. $10k per year to cover mortgage and all expenses for a house? You must be living somewhere with no sewage, power, water, air conditioning, internet, security system, or really anything other than a bare concrete shell. How much does it cost to fix a fence? Or a roof? Or to replace an AC unit? I smell renter all over you.

Edit 2: How the fuck did you find a reasonable house for 300k? I'm looking at properties around Colorado, for example, and anything even remotely acceptable starts at at least 600k. Colorado isn't even that expensive.
