I kind of have a problem with both methods, to be honest. A fixed number, be it median or average, does not really quantify "middle class lifestyle" as some people can live better for 100k in Winnipeg than other people can live for 400k in SF. Still, looking at places where one can easily earn 400k, those being major cities (think financial or IT hubs), your expenses to maintain the same lifestyle will easily cost most of your paycheck,I think it comes from you using (i'm assuming) an average to pin what's considered middle class, rather than a median, which is what literally everybody else does.
