When I searched r/drama for bardfinn content, I quickly discovered that people can't even say the name there. Now, Bardfinn has repeatedly and often used the names of other redditors to label/libel them, but he gets special protection from r/drama naming the lolcow. It seems like they can't even talk about events on reddit anymore. I guess too much talking about the "special protected moderators" will get a subreddit into trouble although it seems like places like subredditdrama/againsthatesubreddits/topmindsofreddit can focus on reddit and individual redditors as much as they wish to. This sort of thing leaves people thinking that the reddit admins have special protections for "pet" moderators. Even as they openly act like predators.

Bardfinn clearly has some special access to admin attention. This is likely combined with some sort of script that continually pings Reddit's API to retrieve all comments (or at least all comments from certain subs of interest) and surface anything that mentions her by name (or some common variants of her name, such as Tardbinn) which she then reviews and reports as she deems fit. If she repeatedly reports a sub's comments she'll argue that it indicates that the mods are failing to prevent systematic harassment and she'll lean on the admins to intervene, which they have done on her behalf on many occasions.

This sort of special influence relationship is the root cause of the problem with Bardfinn. The only other case of this level of protection I've seen was for gallowboob, but at least he was just a paid poweruser rather than a crusader.

Right now the league of trolls are looking for a journalist like Charlie Warzel or Anna Cox to gargle Steven's balls and tell the world what an amazing civil rights crusader he is. When that article comes out the world will hear about how Steven is a retired tech millionaire who uses his elite coding skills to track Nazis like a modern Simon Wiesenthal.

Sadly I agree - the MSM is more likely to give Bardfinn a glow piece than a takedown. Her history of abuse would not be detailed but simply lumped into the generic "hatred" and "harassment" she has experienced from angry Nazis.

I'm really curious what her actual resume looks like - I was willing to believe that she spent at least some amount of time in a real tech job of some sort, but now it seems more likely that she just did some low-level admin and tech support stuff on and off until she made a career shift into Nazi hunting. Either that or she had a "real tech job" and some sort of unknown life events happened and caused some sort of resume gap that prevented her from aiming higher than entry-level tech support in the future. My guess is that it's the former but in any case it involves her massively overstating the prestige of her experience, like usual. My guess is that if she was flipping burgers at McDonalds she'd frame it as being a "key driver of initiatives aimed at solving global hunger" or something.

This ban is non-negotiable. We consider the tagging of Redditors to be a form of automated cyberstalking in violation of Site Wide Rule 7 (which prohibits following Redditors around the site to intimidate them against using the site freely), as well as a potentially illegal privacy violation."

Would you consider adopting a rule like this to send a message to Reddit that the secret tagging of Redditors is unacceptable and that you are willing to take steps to pre-emptive ban people who are known to engage in tagging (like Bardfinn)?
