Games Journalism General

Ben deserves credit because he completely disappeared after quitting GB and doesn't seem to have an online presence anymore.

Drew kind of struck me as a guy who wanted to be behind the scenes but ended up in front of the camera due to his niche interests in stuff that wasn't being covered at GB (mainly simulators.) Cloth Map resulted in a few 1M+ view videos so I'm sure he's happy with the result, as that's one hell of a resume builder.

Dan is doing pretty well on Twitch and is still employed by the WWE. Seems like he's having a lot of fun.

Abby is also on Twitch. Is she doing anything else?

I watched yesterdays streams (The last Gbeastcast and Alex's drumming stream) and there was a lot to pick up on.
Abby is just doing Twitch for right now, but I think from what has been said from various people. it is clear what Giant Bomb will be moving forward.

First was Jeff's garage stream, where he talked about his wife being pregnant again, and how she has been having severe morning sickness. He has to move his office out of the house and into the garage. He also hinted to moving out of California. He said basically both offices got the axe, and that Jan had to go to the west office to retrieve all of the equipment to give to the people. So there will be no more 'office' Giant Bomb.

Vinny said on the Beastcast that he was not given the tools to be successful at his job, so apparently there is some issue there. He also alluded to how difficult working from home is, and how that has put a lot of stress on his life.

Alex's drumming stream was interesting, because he played ride the lightning near the end of his playlist. He said after he left Gamespot, he played this song as one of his last videos there, "which was fitting because the feelings are the same today". It was clearly obvious Alex was upset, and alluded that leaving Giant Bomb was not mutual.

Interestingly enough, it looks like Jeff Bakalar has been consistently on both Abby Russell's and Dan Ryckert's twitch streams. He is now one the two people in charge at Giant Bomb, along with Jeff Gerstmann. So my guess is Giant Bomb is changing to a twitch like service, where there will be a lot of content makers that will have some sort of deal with Giant Bomb.

I think Dan and Abby will probably be announced as Giant Bomb™️ Official Twitch Partners, and their streams will be hosted on Giant Bomb and will likely make exclusive stuff, but they will be independent and do their own thing. So I guess Giant Bomb is pretty much going to be like machinima or curse.

My speculation is Vinny, Alex, and Brad were basically told the premise of new Giant Bomb and did not like knowing the rest of their careers there would be spent behind a webcam. I think they know that can do bigger and better things than being glorified twitch streamers.

Abby is still young and probably wants to continue a career in games media, and Dan likes streaming for fun, so they probably both will take these offers with open arms. The rest probably felt like its time to move on. All of them mentioned moving out of the areas they are in. San Francisco and New York sound like hell to me so I don't blame them.

There's a lot of problems with that unless they drastically have some new ideas
-MCNs (Curse/Machinma) are largely regarded as a "bad idea" by streamers - on the basis that they take a lot and give out very little. They were very profitable in the early 2000s, when people didn't have a handle on the entire streaming concept - but now everyone has a much better handle on it. Curse and Machinma died as a result. I know, to a small regard, Rooster Teeth does this but they're struggling on all ends. The only "exception" that still exists in 2021 would be "pro gamer clans" like FaZe and Method, but that isn't anything approaching normal.
- Dan Rykert is still a WWE employee, the company exercises strict control over it's employees social media. Dan's twtich account is probably company approved - but it's very unlikely they'd let him partner with another company.
- Giantbomb was (apparently) having huge issues attracting, cultivating, and retaining talent even when they were a "premier" place to work - this is only going to hurt that.

If I had to guess - I'd say that Giantbomb isn't going to be rebranded as a MCN, but I am curious as to if whatever they rebrand as puts them into more direct competition with Twitch.

There are days I wonder what happens if everyone not in the Woke group were to just stop interacting with them entirely, no Youtube or Twitter shit fights, no fucking commentary we just don't interact with them in any way shape or form if the entire Woke thing would just immolate itself because they absolutely have to have to be canceling someone.
It absolutely would. They're attention whores first and foremost, and without people constantly confronting them that they can shout down and cancel, they wouldn't get their fix. The most damaging thing anybody can do to a woketard is to disregard them completely. Toss them out of groups, fire them from jobs they insist on disrupting, blacklist them and ignore the screams. If the world would collectively do that, this shit would vanish almost overnight.

Wake me up when someone finally writes an article about the circlejerk/less cool hollywood going on with Indie Games. It's pretty obvious if you look at any indie devs moby games page that they all scratch eachothers backs. I would love to see some inside knowledge about what they're working on or whatever satanic sex cult they have.

So Superbunnyhop released a new video and this man looks like shit. In the pic below I thought it was intentional because he's doing an ad for sex toys, but then I checked out his previous video and yeah, it's not a gag he really does look like a diseased mess now instead of a generic soyboy.

It's really disappointing that he's ended up like this. I really enjoyed his games from my inbox.

Yeah, you are right. I do not think Giant Bomb will be a MCN, but I think they are going to build a network of streaming entertainment, and have featured streamers to bring eyes to their branding. This is all purely speculation on my part, but I think its going to be a place for "industry" people and celebrities. I would not be surprised at all if they were busy making deals with entertainment companies like WWE/AEW/Talent agencies to feature their talent, and help control their streaming activity.

Streaming has become the new replacement for game advertising. Quick looks will probably be gone and replaced by early access streams and day one streams by their giant bomb team and also by guests.

The good ol' days of UPF and studio couch time is dead.

Someone remind me... was Dan Ryckert the moron who said "less sexy anime girls leads to less rape" in a smug blue checkmark fashion?

Something to the tune of... "If we have to deal with a little less boob to stop men raping, I'll take less boob."

There's screenshots of him or someone else like him posting a tweet to that effect. I can't find it right now because it's old and SEO isn't optimizing for it. I think he deleted it, but I'm sure it's somewhere. Might even be around here...

EDIT: Might have been about the Tracer incident where they shrunk her ass or made her pose less sexy.

Well I mean he's not wrong(just look at Islamic countries), but the logic extends to all women.

They should have lead by example and kept Abby away from their podcast IMO.

I don't know if you can though. It sounds good on paper, but if they're contacting your job, or filing false police reports against you, you can't just ignore that unless you want your life destroyed.

I think most clued in developers and publishers ignore them as best they can, but they can't ignore them completely.

No. That was Danny o'Dwyer.

Danny is interesting in that, like Colin Moriarty, he went independent and people actually like his content. This twitter take is at odds with an earlier take he had where he mentioned games journalists were too reactive and holding games to an impossible standard when it came to objectionable content.

While getting that Tweet, I discovered that Kotaku has put out an article complaining about receipts for free games.
I always feel a pang of fear when I see something in my email inbox about newly completed purchases. Did I buy something? Did someone hack me?

No, no. See, that's for violence. Not sexual content. I bet you're a rapist.

Sorry, but not watching the vid, if he mentioned the outrage towards scantily clad women being bad then clearly he has no spine or morals given the retards he's aligned with now. At least Colin stuck to his guns.

The short version is that he got his big break debating "games cause violence" people on talk radio because game journalists kept fucking it up, if they even bothered to at all. Once he moved into games journalism, he pushed for social issues to be addressed in games, but recognised the blow back him and other journalists were getting were the same, but opposite problem.

Then a year later he's saying anime arse causes rapes.

Oddly enough, I don't watch Colin's videos for the same reason you won't watch Danny's old videos. As said in the OP, before he was cancelled, Colin's big claim to fame was the IGN Mass Effect 3 "consume product" video. It was only after he cancelled that he suddenly became pro-consumer.

Surprised Abby hasnt gotten hired by Kotaku to do round the clock Sims coverage yet.
Kotaku has to be flat broke at this point, I haven't seen a name I recognize at that site in at least a year. Anyone with any other option at all has bailed out, I think they pick randos off of twatter to do most of their writing now. I think even Gita Jackson shuffled her fat ass out of there.
