The Asexual Visibility and Education Network

Oh my GOD AVEN.

The thing about this is that no one's oppressing them. No one can FORCE them into a sexual relationship. No one can FORCE them to date. But yeah, too many romantic subplots in movies = WAY worse that centuries worth of murdering and institutionalizing gay people. Totally.

Going forward, let's not drag out arguments in thread to the point of derailment and just focus on insufferable asexuals.
Because, I assure you, there are a lot of them.
Which is why I come bearing links:

Were you aware that the definition of "oppression" is wrong? Also, only individuals can decide if they're oppressed, BUT you're wrong if you think asexuals aren't.

Apparently there's a lot of anti-AVEN talk on Tumblz from other aces, but I can't tell yet which side is more ridiculous.

Also I love when people don't know what "cake" means.

Why the fuck does this even exist? There isn't even a slur for asexuals.
We can invent one: assies.

An assie said:
It is up to the people experiencing the harm to say whether they feel oppressed.
I have to wake up every morning. I feel so oppressed.

Another assie said:
“I came out to a friend who knows asexuality and thought he can encourage me to come out to everyone. But he said “You are just a coldhearted sociopath. You probably don’t have any feelings at all.”
Perhaps it's true?

Assie #3 said:
“I go out to gay bars because I am ace aro and gender queer so it should be a safe place. Every time my sexuality is questioned and when I answer I get ridiculed and insulted.
What the fuck is "ace aro"? And if you want a safe space you should have stayed in college and never go out.

Assie #4 said:
So I’m kind of on the fence about telling people I’m grey-ace.
Grey-ace. The person who said asexuals are the reverse love-shys is true: both invent stupid lingo at the drop of a hat.

Assie #5 said:
“I got told I was being “selfish” for wanting a relationship without sex and that “I should expect my boyfriend to cheat on me” and that I should be ok with it.”

Why it’s Oppression: The people telling this writer that they “deserve” to be cheated on are using her sexual orientation as a reason to invalidate her emotions. Any person has a right to be respected by their romantic partner.
So everything has to be about you really? No wonder these people can't get laid.

By "ace aro" it means asexual aromantic.

Believe me, only learning some of the top of the lingo delves into really stupid nit-picking and classifications. It literally gave me a headache trying to understand it all. It's connected (now) to how tumblr kids go into demiromantic godkins 'n the like. :\

I like "stuck-up prudes," myself.

I know plenty of cool asexual people. Most of them aren't reblogging cake memes and calling people who aren't asexuals "boring" and talking about how awful it is to have sex shoved in their faces all the time, though. Much love to my peeps that don't care about fuckin'.

There is no shame whatsoever in being asexual. It's not a crime to have no interest in sex. The issue arises when you use it as an excuse to shame others for their preferences and lord your status over others.
Which is honestly a pretty apt statement for this sort of thing as a whole.

So has asexuality become what bisexuality was in the 90'/00's? Except that bi erasure is an actual thing that exists, of course.

Anyway...

Having to keep track of all of these labels seems like an awful lot of effort for supposedly being of an orientation that involves not having sex. Or, I guess, having sex all you want while...not...wanting....I need to go lie down. (:_(

i got you covered there.

the 'actuallyasexual' tag is a goldmine of asexuals shitting on gay people, talking about how oppressed they are and generally being fucking stupid.

EDIT:

"who isn't calm"
i dunno maybe the person who unironically called me a shitlord?
I don't understand half of what I'm reading. It looks like a page out of a mad wizard's spellbook.

It is also shameful behavior to construe every sentence about you as an insult, personal attack, or "corrective rape".

I lord it over the loveshies. They deserve to have paranoia about pussy gatekeepers. :P

Pretty much. David Jay is pretty wishy-washy in his interviews, and it does turn into a messy list of terms. I don't understand why it has to be so difficult, but... Yeah. To have some distinction is good, but not to that extent. There shouldn't be an issue with someone just plainly not wanting sex, but I can see how some aces could be seen as flirts or teases.

A lesbian I knew kept trying to touch and hug me because she read online that aces loved to be cuddled like cats.

Romantic orientations are one of the most retarded things I've seen from the Tumblr crowd (not sure where it originated, but I was first exposed to it there.) Especially that "demiromantic" thing, because that basically just describes everyone. Believe it or not, the categories get even more spergy. This whole "ace community" just reeks of autism and social awkwardness.

One problem I find with asexuals is that a lot of them (not all, mind. I do believe it is a real thing, just nowhere near as common as tumblr makes it out to be.) are teens -particularly teen girls- still going through puberty who haven't really learned to feel "okay" with sex yet. Their only experiences with the concept usually comes from severely subpar sex ed programs that basically amount to "Don't have sex or you'll get pregnant and die alone with superherpes" and that scares them. Or perhaps they try to get into porn and find lots and lots of mainstream "DUMB BITCH GETS HER PUSSY DESTROYED AND HUMILIATED" type stuff, which scares them even more.

But instead of admitting they're scared of it, they decide to build their identity around it. And it's incredibly harmful. Many of them eventually go on to realize "hey, bumping my bits actually feels GOOD! and I'm not gonna die!" but by that point they're in too deep. That's where you get shit like demisexuality.

"virtually" still implies they've got one. A heterosexual with an insanely low sex drive is still heterosexual, as is a gay or bisexual person.

They're only asexual if they have no sex drive at all. Zilch.
I'm sure there's some sort of Kinsey-like spectrum between never ever being sexually attracted to anyone and occasionally having a very faint, brief sexual feeling but only if drunk.
