A lot more are going to unsubscribe as they see this content pop up, it stands out because he is now dressed as a woman, and decide to unsubscribe as they realize they haven't been watching it. Notice anything? Views are fairly consistent. He has the same number of actual viewers as he ever had, the only thing that has gone down is the arbitrary number of subscribers.

And this is despite his content becoming stale, repetitive, less creative, and more depressing - a lot of which he admitted in this Under 900k Special. He is just a big whingey cry-baby who doesn't want to make videos about games any more, but realizes his audience is only interested in that subject. Man, all those years of working a modest day job while enjoying my hobbies as hobbies now looks like the smarter move.

That was 30 minutes of being in denial of a lot of things. This is precisely the kind of JQ I expected when the skittles first appeared, and given Jim's penchant for beating a horse corpse, won't be the last time. Jim is quickly crossing the line from unsubbed to completely unwatched.

On some level, I can understand Jim’s frustration, but this is also one of those “nature of the beast” situations.

I could empathise if the situation Jim finds himself in wasn't largely of his own creation.

He complains about YouTube being anti-creator yet throughout his time on the platform he has been gleefully antagonistic towards YouTube; doing everything he can to be as undesirable to them without overtly breaching the T&Cs, and openly advertising the things he does to fuck with them.

He deliberately puts copyrighted music in his videos, deliberately uses vulgar language and sexual gestures (albeit for the purposes of comedy), and routinely shits where he eats by constantly insulting YouTube. While I personally don't have a problem with any of that, from YouTube's perspective why wouldn't they want to bury his channel? He is nothing but a burden to them, and a deliberate one at that.

But not content with merely biting the hand that feeds, he also has to constantly take out his frustrations on his viewers; bitching nearly every video about dwindling viewership, TAHXIC communities and how he essentially hates everything about his job now. Who does he think that appeals to? If he could just view the situation objectively for one second, he might understand that his current content appeals to nobody. People who like him don't want to see him miserable, people who want industry analysis don't want to hear about wrassling or tranny shit, and people who want video game reviews don't want a 5 minute pre-amble about Jim getting catcalled, which Absolutely Happened™ you guys.

I also think that current gaming youtube is experiencing a shift away from the jaded and cynical "REEE MICROTRANSACTIONS" videos Jim got popular with. It might just be the people I watch but lately I've been seeing a lot more positive lets play and review type videos, and if they're negative it's usually more of a light hearted comedic tone. Maybe people have just gotten tired of being angry about everything, but if so Jim is fucked because I don't think he's capable of being positive.

I tried to have an open mind for this video, he tried to be balanced at the start and he made some points that I agreed with for the first 20 minutes, although he was unwilling to admit that his content has gone down in quality, and that this might also be a factor for the drop. He seemed to blame it all on repetition and people being transphobic. But the last 10 minutes he just went fucking crazy, If you don't want to watch the whole video just watch that, you can literally hear him slip into delirium as he gets angrier and angrier at imagined slights and attacks as his inner schizoid comes out.

Yeah I definitely agree. Unless you're comedic about it like Zero Punctuation, I think people are sick of the nihilistic bitching and doomering. They either want news, entertainment or something unique, like Digital Foundry's deep dives, Modern Vintage Gamer's programming videos or Ahoy's documentaries.

We know microtransactions and similar predatory bullshit sucks but the reality is there is way more to enjoy in video games today than there is to be angry about, and unfortunately that is all Jim knows how to do.

Yeah I'd have to fully agree with that. I've unsubbed most "Angry Gamers" over the past few years and subbed more people like you describe.

But I'd have to say it's also because of politics, a lot of people are utterly fucking sick of politics and actively avoid anything and anyone who talks about anythic related to politics, society and current events and goes for whoever does good escapism from real world shit.

This is why I jumped ship to YongYea's content some time ago, because Yong covers the exact same subjects as Jim - even right down to the constant "crunch is bad" stuff - but without all the autistic action figure skit humor that we all left behind in the TGWTG era of the internet. What amazes me most about this is that if you listen to Jim's podcasts over the years, he has that shy introvert mentality where all his embarrassing shit keeps him up at night, but while most people move on from that, he doubles down on everything he's self conscious about. You're right. I think videos that point out the flaws of games or scumbaggery of companies still do well but you have to tread new ground or go into some detail. Jim denies it but his content is incredibly lazy. 80% of it is interchangeable between his other video's while maybe the remaining 20% goes into the specific subject, and I'm being generous.

The truth that he's not willing to admit is that his content is low-effort and is done better by younger and more charismatic people. And also that most of his videos are just a platform now for him to shove his unresearched politics into people's faces.

When Jim says that YouTube is a notoriously transphobic platform, is he referring to the users or the company itself. If it’s the latter, I have a hard time accepting that a gigantic tech company, a sector that is widely woke, would hold such views.

I see LGBT creators claim that YouTube is an anti LGBT platform for allowing some anti LGBT videos and comments to exist on their site and not letting things like sex toy reviews, sexual discussion, and female breasts be monetized despite YouTube's outward support of and making rules protecting LGBT people. There was that lawsuit by LGBT creators a few years back cuz of the latter.
