Nexpo/YT Horror Channels - Do they all suck

Dark Histories mentioned in this thread falls into this category IMO. He's not bad, he's covered some interesting stuff I've never heard, but he always seems to have 25 minutes or content he's trying to make an hour out of.
You're approaching him wrong, it's just that he's a great fucking narrator. I know all lot of what he talks about and he stretches it, but I'll be goddamned if I don't smoke a blunt and listen to him at night before bed and feel comfy af.

Really hate it when videos of abuse victim end it with a dialog of calling suicide/abuse hotline. Is there a time those actually has helped? And it comes off as condescending, as if everyone watching the video is thinking of suicide/is an abuse victim.

Just because I like to watch murder mysteries, doesn't mean there's any problems in my life.
Casefiles presents every fucking time. If you can't deal with death why the hell are you watching a fucking murder story lol.

I can't speak about abuse hotlines, but suicide hotlines are largely useless. They usually can't say anything you haven't already heard a billion times before. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, you'll be glad you didn't do it in some time, there is help available, etc. One thing they can do is put you in touch with people who can help, but that's not an immediate fix to a crisis.
I think they have their place but a lot of people expect them to be a cure-all.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem
Look, technically human life is temporary but that's intellectually corrupt as an argument. If the problem is you're supposed to exist another 40-50 years in a broken body and fractured mind, it's not a temporary problem.

ooh baby, that's the good doom right there

Well its worth mentioning that not all of these hotlines employ mental health professionals, and among the ones that do, its often just a couple of people on standby rather than everyone that answers the phone.
They're trained to get you to say you won't kill yourself right now, not save your life.
That's why the quality of their arguments aren't great.

I would say their main value is delaying people who are considering suicide out of anger or another extreme, rather than someone who is consistently dealing with this. If nothing else, they can keep you on the phone long enough to calm down.

You know, Wendigoon is only one of a handful of Youtubers I actually have notifications on for. (Is that grammatically correct? It doesn't feel like it is.) The Bible Theory Iceberg is just what I needed after finishing finals for this semester. It's neat because I recognize some of the names due to my Roman History class

Fascinating Horror has been mentioned a few times in here, I'd argue to say he's by far the most consistent in quality. Horror Stories is similarly entertaining but sounds like he's in his fourth puberty, but he's quick and to the point so I won't fault him.

On the other end of the spectrum, CreepsMcPasta's voice makes me want to BTFO my eardrums. His soft, childlike Brit voice is unbearable IMO, which is odd because I've never really been bothered by Nexpo or MrCreeps, who both have Tryhard styles of speaking to try and amplify the horror.

Lol and to think not even a week ago I was giving Monsters some praise. Literally starting his second video on Jennifer Pan condescendingly and sarcastically recounting what she described happened and the 911 call. We get it moron you think she's evil, what a bold and powerful statement. I'll just go rewatch the JCS video if this is how you're gonna go about it. And he also does that annoying domestic abuse hotline spiel at the end of his videos, even on topics that aren't fucking related. I'm pretty sure actual domestic abuse victims know those hotlines exist and don't need a pretentious youtuber to tell them as if they're dumb retards who don't know what's good for themselves.

Monsters is the faggot one right? Or is it this is monsters? I know one is just a shit tts reader thing.

What are your thoughts on Youtubers who cover/have covered solved crimes?

When the new Netflix special about Elisa Lam came I saw a few people who were critical of it because the family doesn't want it covered anymore, and the special was made without their permission.
Yet there are a lot of Youtubers who retell solved cases and I've never seen them get such criticism.

Truth is that you have to go out of your way to find channels that cover such events, while Netflix tends to put their new shows front and center for everyone to see. I'm not defending YT peeps who cover stuff that the victims and/or their relatives don't want touched, but they are rather miniscule compared to a documentary on a popular site that has way less content and every new scrap of media is in the spotlight for at least a day or two.

You don't really have to dig deep, just go to the true crime girls (most notably Eleanor Neale) to see all the solved videos.
It's true that a Youtube channel won't bring in as much publicity as a network special, but it feels a bit scummy to me since they are making profit from others' pain.
I mean, they still do with unsloved crimes, but most of those would welcome anykind of attention, I think.

Disregard the fact I can't stand all the true crime girls, I don't see the point in the majority of these videos. They all cover the same exact crimes on a rotation without bringing anything new to the table, just reading a wikipedia summery while doing their shitty makeup. The only exception I can think of is maybe early days Stephanie Harlowe, she would cover solved cases but go really in depth in a way no other solved crimes youtuber does. I would much rather listen to a 5 hour long retelling of every point in Andrew Cunanan's life to understand who he was and what led to what he did than a 20 minute video that just lists bullet points everyone already knows. There's also Brief Case, the stuff he covers are extremely obscure and old as fuck. You could even argue to a degree that his content brings awareness to victims who otherwise no one would've even known existed.

I like Stephanie Harlowe because she does really interesting long videos that I can use as background noise. My only problem with her is similar to your problem with Monsters - she can be pretty heavy on the sarcasm and 'sass'. I don't know why it winds me up because she does cover some really contemptible people, but her sneering and scornful laughter quickly becomes pretty tiring. Like you said above: we get it, Steph, you think they're evil, what a brave opinion.

I do like Eleanor Neale, though. Lots of the cases are familiar but I like her delivery, she comes across as an excitable little sweetheart! However, her comment sections are always full of people gushing over her makeup and looks, which is my main problem with this 'true crime girl' vogue: maybe I'm getting fusty in my old age but I find something so off about these girlies shilling skincare products in an intro to a video about child murder, or talking about vicious sex crimes while doing their makeup like they're gossiping in a ladies' bathroom.

My problem with Stephanie Harlowe is every time she's shilling something, she gives her fucking life story and makes the spiel longer than any commercial on TV. The shit isn't life changing, just say what they want you to, shouldn't be any longer than 30 seconds. Also she goes off on tangents sometimes, at least once per video. If it's not directly related to the crime, I don't care.

This is Monsters has added the suicide and domestic abuse hotline numbers to this season, but its relevant to the videos because that's what they're about this season, it's all abusive relationships ending in death. I don't mind the sarcasm, honestly, it's not a documentary so he has no reason to seem neutral.

new reignbot, p good, well sourced and well presented content as always

At least it's not another video whining about the Phillipines or talking about how she's Asian.

Why are you acting like true crime youtubers putting the numbers for suicide and domestic abuse hotlines is a direct attack towards you? That's just the kind of shit their content is made out of. Of course they'd include it.

Wendigoon is pretty good when it comes to iceberg chart videos and YouTube horror in general since he mostly does go into depth instead of just randomly listing off the entries.

But I'll admit that I'm a sucker for the iceberg chart videos and I enjoy them unironically a lot of the time.

I personally don't get too bothered by it and just accept it, especially since in this day and age, it's good to have those type of things at the end.

Absolute best case scenario, maybe it can save a life.

Absolute worst case scenario, it at least works as a "cover your ass" disclaimer and you can just skip that part of the video.
