I wonder if she’s going to post about phantom pains, a phenomenon that causes many amputees feel pain in limbs that were amputated, even though they’re no longer there. I worked with a guy in this situation, except he (luckily?) had lost one leg to a traumatic above-knee amputation as a young man, decades before, so he remembered it. The second leg went to diabetes, and that one came as a surprise to him, multiple times a day.

Sometimes he fell after trying to do a pivot transfer on the leg he was sure he had, sometimes he just whipped off his lap blanket and asked incredulously about his other leg. He was redirectable, though.

He had extensive neuropathy, so sometimes he'd shed his clothing and walk around on his stumps without a care in the world. If you saw him doing that from across the hallway, it looked like someone skinny-dipping who was up to his thighs in water.

(He was not continent and he was at risk of damaging the skin on his stumps, so we tried to avoid this situation.)

I'd imagine you have the qualify your prosthetics based on your ability to comply with doctor's orders. Kelly has shown she isn't capable of doing anything she's been told to do by her doctors. You don't do bariatric surgery on someone who can't control their eating, you don't do a lung transplant on someone who refuses to quit smoking.

**BC provides limbs for basic functionality. So you need to have a case that you can use them and they'll improve your function. She's got lots of work ahead of her. I wouldn't be optimistic about her doing it, but it's smart for her care team to make it a goal. It might be the carrot they're dangling to get her to leave the wounds alone.
