Unbelievably, after 44 years, Septic Tank Sam has finally been identified!
His name is Gordon Edwin Sanderson, and he was identified on June 29th, 2021. He was known as “Gordie” by his friends, and was 26-years-old when was murdered. He had planned on visiting his younger brother in Calgary, but never made it due to his subsequent death.
Sanderson was put into foster care when he was nine after the Sixties Scoop, an utterly horrific period of time where indigenous families could have their children legally taken from them, and put into the system to be adopted by white families. Afterwards, he struggled with addiction and had several run-ins with the law.
Sanderson’s heavily decomposed, and quicklime covered body was discovered in a septic tank by a couple scavenging on an abandoned property. He had been tied up, beaten, burned with a butane torch, and cigarettes and had his genitals mutilated so severely that it took an examiner several months to make sure he was male. He was eventually killed by two gun wounds to the head, and but given the severe rate of decomposition his body was found in, it is possible he suffered more.
Due to the severity, and nature of the crime, it’s theorized that Sanderson had been killed in revenge for a prior possible sexual assault, or for being an unfaithful partner, but nothing like that has ever been proven. Another prominent theory was that he was involved in criminal activities around the Edmonton area, but this hasn’t been proven either.
One of the officers who recovered Sanderson’s body had originally believed he would never be identified, even after he spent $1,000,000 CAD (Canadian Dollars) on the case, and sent X-Rays of Sanderson’s teeth to 800 dentists all across Canada. He has not been reached for comment as of yet.
Sanderson’s only known surviving family members are his older sister (whose DNA was used to help identify him), and daughter, but they have also not commented at this time. Investigators admit that there is a high-chance that Sanderson’s killer, or killers have passed away by now, but are working hard to still find them.

Processing Sanderson’s DNA is an amazing feat due to the severe amount of decomposition, and contamination his body was found in, not to mention considering how much time has passed since he was killed. If we process the DNA of a guy who was killed forty years ago, dropped into a septic tank, and then covered in quicklime, think of what else we can do!
Rest in peace, Gordie. You had the most violent death out of any Doe that’s been identified in this thread, and I desperately hope it’s not one you deserved-even more than I hope that we find out who did it to you in the first place.
