G4 Returning in 2021

  • 🔧 Actively working on site again.
Giant Bomb has a twitch channel where it cycles through their entire back catalog (minus what got purged, like Ryan casually dropping the faggot word) and with a few minutes left a poll auto-pops with five random choices for watchers to vote on what comes next. Something like that, or exactly like that, could be pretty cool for the G4 reboot. But the chat would get dominated by troons who want to talk about nothing but Animal Crossing, instead of riffing on '00s bullshit and nostalgia like GB's chat did.

Six months before diving into IdPol is a highly optimistic guess.

I'll give them eleven minutes.

Honestly, the only way you could bring back that "old school gaming journalism" is if you just did a "spiritual successor" site or streaming channel under a different name.

I'm surprised nobody's made a genuine attempt at a truly apolitical gaming journalism/gaming culture and history site or channel. If you played up the 1990's/2000's nostalgia angle and the Y2K Aesthetic, you could probably get a small but loyal or decent sized following
If I had the capital I'd make a website to bring back some of the old Ziff Davis crew of magazines like EGM and OPM and maybe some of the old guard of websites like IGN and Destructoid who have scattered to the wind to make some kind of uber version of what gaming journalism was in the 2000s.

I've tried to track down some of the old EGM and OPM people and I don't think any of them are still in gaming journalism, I'd love to see their input return.

I wouldn't even say that there could absolutely never be any politics ever, just that it wouldn't be in everything, there could be a place for it if people wanted it, but if you didn't, you wouldn't have to have it forced on you.

And it would have to be level headed politics with more than one view, with no attacking the audience, no pearl clutching hysterics, just logical, thought provoking stuff.

But the most important thing is that first and foremost it would be about video games, not political propaganda with video games as a distant second.

It's an investment scam meant to milk money out of whichever idiot is throwing his money at it. Nobody cares about the actual product, including the people producing it, and it will be forgotten as soon as the money runs out.

Giant Bomb
I will go and watch all the Microsoft Game Room Quick Looks, now. And then I will cry... because of how happy I am that Ryan died before gamer gate could ruin my memories of his work.

What exactly do you think the likelihood of making old G4 content available is, especially in the case of X-Play?

I wonder if all the clips of games they used in X-Play would make re-releasing it not feasible or if it would all fall under fair use, I can't imagine it wasn't fair use to begin with, they weren't paying licenses for all the footage they used in every single episode, were they?

If I expect anyone to be able to figure out though it'd be Comcast, we're not talking some small Youtube channel but a major media conglomerate, the question is do they care enough?

On a side note, it's weird that one of my favorite things as a kid, Jurassic Park and one of my favorite things as a teen, X-Play, are all both owned by Comcast.

Those videos feature too much problematic material to monetize in current year. The male gaze, too many white people, classism and too many white people. They must be left in the past

Comcast is not quite as woke as other media conglomerates though, the Jurassic World movies still star a WHITE MALE protagonist (and in the first JW had a woman running around in heels lmao), the Fast and The Furious movies still seem concerned first and foremost with being entertainment, they're just not as full force into it as say Disney or Warner Brothers.

So I can see Comcast not really caring much if old G4 content is unwoke or not.

Forgive me for bringing this thread back if the info has been posted elsewhere on the forum.

Today G4 announced that they added Jirard Khalil "The Completionist" and Gina Darling to their group of people as part of their next phase of trying to come back.

No idea about Darling, but Jirard joining it when he's already in groups like the rebranded Normal Boots(Which got rebranded AGAIN recently) on top of his crazy work schedule as the Completionist caught me off guard.
What is up with bears like Jirard adding pronouns to the bio?

Probably to help ward off some of the twitter people who beeline trying to cancel him for making one out of line tweet on an a trending issue.

Like I get why some people do it if they don't use their picture or do media not involving their looks, but like you can clearly see him in everything and you know it's a dude.
TechTV> G4.
There was a time I remember very well where all the classic G4 shows(before they were altered) were running at the same time the Screensavers and X-play was on (which were making new episodes). The time was extremely short, but my god that was the best blend for those two channels content wise. The network's interference really fucked up so many things and made it shit, but for a brief moment from it's joint launch it was legit a perfect blend.

Screensavers and Judgement Day(Reviews on the Run for you canucks) were extremely ahead of their time.

It says something about the state of G4 that I consider The Completionist too good for their channel.

It’s the first line of defense to keep the woke mob from devouring you. It’s the modern equivalent of putting lamb’s blood on your door, but it’s not nearly as effective since these mobs need rage calories.

TechTV> G4.
Absolutely, but I still have a lot of fond memories of G4.

The main difference between the two was TechTV was legit as nerdy as it gets, airing stuff like Forbidden Planet and Thunderbirds in 2002 and when they started airing anime in 2003 they kicked it off with Serial Experiments Lain, which is weirder than anything Adult Swim has ever aired (with only Paranoia Agent coming close)

G4 meanwhile was trying to be "cool" in the early days of "geek chic" and later they tried to court the Adult Swim style "late night edgy TV audience"

But despite all that G4 was still cool too, it only went to shit when they started airing more and more reruns that had less and less to do with anything that could be described as "geek culture" (ie Cheaters)

People like jitard? ....
I'd say at his whole, he is a good dude. Some of his content can be pretty cringe, mainly with the writing of the completionist at times dipping too hard into stupid randomXDhumor. Alex Vaies though (one of his co-hosts and used to their Pokemon weekly series) is just really fucking annoying to me and looks like the equivalent of a walrus gasping for air whenever he's on screen trying to pass himself off as a "Yeah I'm pretty cool" guy type.

But Jirard as a guy who is actually heading his company and being successful he does do a lot, donates to charities, promotes indies, handles his merch sales personally within his company, and meets his goals on a weekly basis he does a great job. He also managed that huge fallout with his co-host Greg years ago very transparently and let his viewers know why this shit is happening, why Greg wanted the videos pulled, and what he's doing to fix it. He's just very more professional about stuff then other people in his field which is refreshing

You compare him to Arin Hanson who is basically the same template but managed to fuck up so much so often and still continues to and people like Jirard are kept looking much nicer.

This is also me speaking as a dude who casually watches him. I'm not a stan or faggot who kisses his feet at every waking moment he does something or a movement . However from the stuff I see he gets featured in he does do much more helping then hurting which is a lot when these personalities are always having skeletons come out of their closets.

Regardless I do have to agree I think Jirard is actually TOO good for this G4 reboot, and would have actually been a perfect fit for the original channel back in the days of Cheat with Coury Rouse.

New G4 feels like a skeleton of it's former self, and when you see groups like Normal Boots (which Jirard is in) doing the same stuff with modern mindsets now it really makes you question why G4 is even trying to come back when the age of TV (it's selling point) is dead.

On g4 don't forget when they started airing cops as well.

Did you know that this tweet from G4TV calling gamers toxic was deleted back in April 2021?

Honestly when geek became cool that is when things started going to hell. It is not about blocking new people from coming in, but about those who are not genuine coming in to change everything. Gaming/geek culture was not toxic until the fake geeks came in kicking everyone around.

Don't you think when you go around insulting people all the time that people are going to start resenting you? But these people don't care, they have an agenda to push. They don't like nerds, and it is in malice they lush the agenda. I have run out of goodwill with these people.

I almost mentioned Cops but then I couldn't remember for sure whether G4 did air reruns or not.

But yeah, once they started playing that shit it was over, it was pure "what's the cheapest filler we can find?" than finding programming that actually fit the theme in some way.
