Anecdote: years ago, in 2013 or 2014, I made a road trip through the southern US and when I drove through Tennessee, especially the bigger cities like Knoxville, more than half the PSA billboards visible from the interstate highway were warnings against meth. Not only the usual "meth is bad for you" anti-drug ads, but also billboards warning specifically of the harsh legal penalties involved in making or selling it. One said something like "Cook, and lose your kids," and it obviously was not talking about food.

Anyone who has ever watched Cops or Live PD has seen this type of thing play out countless times. You don't even have to have known a junkie growing up or lived in a bad neighborhood. The suspect changes their story constantly. They minimize their actions and dismiss them as inconsequential. Then it turns out they have active warrants, a bunch of dope, and a handgun hidden in the car upholstery.

Also pretty sure intent to distribute is usually a charge when you have over a certain amount of drugs (I.e, more than what you would just use for yourself), and can also be charged when you are caught with in combination with instruments to sell (baggies, scales, etc). I’m going with other kiwis in thinking that he had a ton of pot he was going to make edibles with for his friends, hence all the “cooking supplies”.

It's not often charged as such, but any time you convert a drug from one form to another, such as by baking a batch of pot brownies, it's considered (in many states) to be "manufacture," which is a separate offense. And while possessing a certain amount of a drug can create a presumption of "distribution," if you were obviously intending to distribute, you don't need to have that amount of the drug, they just need to prove you intended to distribute.

So at least in theory any time you bake pot brownies with the intent of eating them with other people, there are a lot of serious charges you could get hit with, even though you rarely actually do. My guess is he was a mouthy little bitch and they decided to charge hard.

There was a notorious case in Texas a few years back where a 19 year old was facing a potential life sentence for a batch of hash brownies. It ended up in a plea deal for probation, but this kind of bullshit can happen. Part of it was the fact it was hash and not just pot, and part of it was that the scumbag prosecutor included the weight of the flour, sugar, eggs, etc. as part of the entire weight of the drug, jacking up the charges to the stratosphere.

If you want to give Dave more credit than he's ever due, technically he only said 'medically and legally', not 'biologically'. This is really only a distinction that matters to people like Rhys McKinnon, who thinks he's being clever by saying he's legally a woman so he must be a woman, and assholes like Lavery who either say, or genuinely, delusionally believe, that they can physically change sex.

This is still a sticking point for me. It's not even that I think he's definitely lying about there being other people who he's spending time with, either these 'friends' he was going to cook for or the 'friends' he's staying with currently. Troons like Dave are skilled limpets, attaching themselves to whoever doesn't scrape them off vigorously enough. Hell, he might even have some troon/handmaiden friends - people are stupid enough to have donated five figures to a GFM in his name, they're surely stupid enough to spend time with him willingly.

But like with the cops, there's a distinct lack of names and identities. Unlike with the cops, however, these are going to be people on Twitter - and more importantly, people who Dave can use to 'prove' his story. That is to say, they should be able to say how traumatised and totally crying and shaking rn Dave is, which is the same thing as him telling the truth about what he went through, because feels over reals.

To my knowledge, though, Dave doesn't generally have specific people he interacts with IRL, for reasons I'm sure we can all guess. So, considering he has a long history of making up bullshit, until any of these friends pop up to 'verify' his presence, I'm just going to presume they're fictional/exaggerated beyond recognition. It would be ignoring Dave's long history of lolcowdom to give him any benefit of the doubt.
