I hope the new smt revamp order because, at least since smt3 the game heavily pushes chaos as the better alternative like some edgy faggot.

Also fuck neutral routes, they always make the entire chaos vs. order obsolete. The only wat a neutral route should end is with everyone dead except the hero.

SMTV looks like it's going to be the first lawfag boogaloo game since SMT II, at least that's what I'm hoping.

The mainline smt games follow the neutral game-law game-chaos game, nd seeing as how 4 was the neutral game this one seems to be heavely biased in the lawfags favor

Never got into either franchise, but was always interested in P4. 3's gameplay seems too dated by far, while Persona 5's loose adherence to its themes & the treatment of its characters does not sit well with me.
Persona 4 has always been billed as a chill time + a great introduction to the genre. With the Steam port out, I was wondering what the consensus is over here. Is there more to it than baby's first JRPG?

I am aware of the SMT v Persona situation, no need to exalt the former. Aside from Digital Devil Saga, I'm not interested.

I've heard the rumours but I'd need to see it doesn't switch halfway with the usual "god being a tyrant is bad, but being a tyrant based on genetic strength is A-okay".

Also I'm looking back and am baffled by how many games there were on the ps2, only for more of a decade of barely any games. I hope something changes in the game industry so companies will make games again.

P4 is a very unique game. You'll enjoy it a lot more if you are a fan of SoL anime from the mid to late 2000's, it really captures a small town highschool feel. In terms of characters, they're marmite and definitely the kind of stereotypes you'd have gotten in a game/anime of that era, but if you dont like that, Rise and Teddie will definitely grate on you.
Just remember that its not the plot you should be focusing solely on, its living your life in Inaba and immersing yourself in the town. Catch some fish or build a gunpla for the fox in the shrine, enjoy it. Don't try and bomb through it.

I'd recommend p5r as well, not sure what you've heard about loose adherence but it's pretty consistent from what I remember

I should've clarified, I meant P4G. These games have an asinine rerelease tradition. SoL anime is something I've found to be relaxing. Bombing through something has never been my style, I grind media down to a fine powder and snort every particle. JRPGs seem autistic enough to accomodate such a playstyle.

As I understand it, Persona games from 3 onwards have a noticeable problem with their writing -> social links are optional, thus the main plot can't accomodate the possible change in character, despite the importance of those arcs to each individual character. It gives the writing a loose and fanservicey feel, where none of what its going is allowed to solidify. Add the intrinsic problems with the shounen genre and dedicated romance routes to the mix (something I've never been a proponent of) and the game can hardly accomodate any more for its intended audience. Comes across as pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Are the characters across P3-5 all marmite? Do they lack depth because the aforementioned arcs are never allowed to manifest properly? Stereotypes are something I can tolerate, so long as they aren't obnoxious.

The characters are stereotypes to some degree but nothing too grating. As for social links, it's also not too big a deal in that the party character growth isn't that heavily focused on in the main plot. It's integral to P3 because of the theme of death and how much the literal concept wants to kill them but the game sidesteps it with the Social links not being involved with the party itself outside of romance.

P4G is essentially the same game. I prefer the ps2 original but in terms of content, Golden has it beat.

In terms of character development, you're right in that in 4 and 5, the main arc for a character is only touched on during the social link and rarely brought up during the plot. This is mainly because their arcs are mostly irrelevant to the plot.
For instance, Yukiko is introduced as not wanting to be forced into inheriting her parents inn and wants someone to take her from Inaba to get away from it. This is covered in the Yukiko's Castle arc. Once complete, her development on that is put on the High Priestess social link, which is optional to complete. The main plot doesn't revisit it again, it's up to you to pursue it. So the plot and mandatory events doesn't really factor her character arc in, but they dont need to as her arc has no bearing on the plot or her personality.

3 is different though, SEES' arcs are built into the main plot. It's honestly worth muscling through the archaic gameplay at least once

The characters arent all marmite. Rise and Teddie are the biggest offenders, mainly for being shrill 'Senpaiiiii' sorts. And if you dont want romance arcs, then every female SL in 4 and 5 have platonic paths too. In 3 you're forced into it though

3 Portable is there to mitigate some of the sillyness, but of course some content was downsized for the PSP even though you got FeMC
Would you recommend FES or Portable

Both are worth playing, if only P3P for the FeMC route and the different SL's she gets
Play FES first though. Portable has a lot of it stripped down, like navigating the town is essentially menus. AI teammates isnt as bad as everyone makes out, you just need to remember to use the orders so the team does what you need them to. Also, Portable isnt balanced for full control so you'll steamroll the game. Finally, while The Answer is a bit of a slog, it does explain the ending which is needed.

I'm new to SMT and was wondering what Law, Neutral, and Chaos mean?
Law = Heaven/God, which is order and safety taken to the extreme most times

Neutral = Balance, which rejects the extremes of Law and Chaos and focuses on individuality and the inherent strength of mankind.

Chaos = Hell/Lucifer, which is pure freedom/anarchy. Which usually leads the world into a state of vice and survival of the fittest.

And the protagonist can pick which one he wants?
